|Showing Distances in Metric for My Maps||JJSowers||11/24/11 10:17 AM|
URL (if applicable):Summary of Issue: This is NOT about mapping directions. This is a question regarding when you make you create a map ("My Places"). When I add a line "Draw a line along roads", the measurement shows in Miles; I want the option for my lines to show metric distances. I have looked everywhere, but maybe I have missed it. I cannot believe that metric is not an option. Help :-)

I think it depends on which site you are using. If you reach Google maps from http://maps.google.com/, you will be in the US site, and will see distances in miles.
But if you access it from http://maps.google.ca, you will be in the Canadian site, and see kilometres. At least, that's what I've always understood. I haven't tested it for myself.

Hi Mike, You are correct! It did require me to re-login since it saw me trying to come in from a Canadian extension, but then I saw metric distances. Still, it is really silly that Google makes it this hard for us forward-looking Americans to think globally :-)

Unfortunately if you log in with google.co.uk, you get miles. I've measured all my running and swimming in metres, but when I tried adding the routes to My Places, they're all shown in miles. It does seem odd that this is a fixed parameter depending on country site, rather than settable per route.

I'm from the UK and I was taught the metric system when I was at school, 35 years ago! Come on Google, give us the option, don't presume to choose for us!
