|UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||aladdin||10/7/04 6:34 AM|
What do Timbuktu, Kathmandu, and the Statue of Liberty have in common? They are all World Heritage Sites. As of October, 2004, there are 788 sites designated by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, to "encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity."
The attached 1-megabyte KML file locates all UNESCO World Heritage sites with a "star" placemark. Those with a red outline designate "endangered" sites.
Click or right-click any World Heritage placemark for a descriptive "snippet" and up to four clickable links:
Most of these sites are still "low-res." Even so, the World Heritage placemarks and links take you to hundreds of fascinating, beautiful, exotic places. Many of them were completely unknown to me...I suspect many will have been unknown to you as well. Enjoy your journey!

Aladdin, what a wonderful service you have done here! This is great in inspiration and in execution. So many virtues--the text, the photos, links to images, coded icons, and the comprehensiveness.
You have helped unwind the Ball of Confusion. This is the fruit of Keyhole that I have always dreamed of seeing!
Be seeing you, Seer
|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||St_Louis_Hawk||10/7/04 7:52 AM|
I'm stunned, Aladdin. This truly is a project of tremendous scope and significant value. You've just made Keyhole worth a lot more. Thank you!
Hmmm....I wonder how many World Heritage Sites have webcams....
|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||judgelrae||10/7/04 10:00 AM|
What a hit... Nice work. Ok... Great work!
But, if you had put those into your own Forum, in a gigantic thread, you would have shot right from Explorer through World Explorer to Oracle and become the second ranked poster on this BBS. (297+788 = 1085) Thank You Keyhole for the KML ability.
And St_Louis_Hawk, You made me laugh with the comment about web-cams.
|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||Phred||10/7/04 2:42 PM|
WOW - WOW - WOW!
I am literally stunned... What a fantastic job you have done here Aladdin! As Seer said, this type of work is the reason Keyhole is such a great product, not just from a technical standpoint, but as a wonderful educational tool.
These new features are really bringing so much to the table, I can't wait to see what the community comes up with next!
Just brilliant, brilliant work sir. I second Seer on the nomination of "Best KML of the Year" - See you on the red carpet!
Thanks for this.

What a fabulous collection of placemarks and links. I'm having a great time exploring the sites. Many thanks to you, Earthviewer and UNSECO for making this collection available. It really makes me think about all those folks who made these heritage site in the first place.

|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||aladdin||10/8/04 12:46 AM|
Thanks for the great response, guys. Of course, credit really belongs with the World Heritage Centre.
I've corrected some location errors in the first upload: Ha Long Bay (Viet Nam), Belize Barrier Reef, the Acropolis (Greece), and Skellig Michael (Ireland.) I also reduced the icon size from 1.6 down to 1. You can re-download from the original post.
For future changes, I added a "Notes" folder, where I'll log what has changed. (That way, you can download, then choose to transfer all, or just the changes to "My Places.")
As you find errors, please send me a message. If the error is an incorrect placement, it will help a lot if you can send me the correct latitude/longitude - as best you can determine!

Well, I'm impressed! We've rubbed the lamp and Aladdin granted our wish! I can see so many of our threads tied up in neat packages a la Aladdin's masterpiece...corporate signs, battleships, airplanes, lighthouses, etc.
Just shows you what happens when you leave for a couple days! Don't know where you found the time, Genie, but thank you for the work. Someday, it will be nice to see all these UNESCO sights in high rez, eh?

|Re: UNESCO World Heritage (Nordic Corrections)||Moaguten||2/12/05 3:20 PM|
Like so many others, I find this post to be great. A very useful posting representing a lot of work.
As you can see, I live in Norway, and it was a bit shocking to me that a lot of the placemarks for the Nordic countries were quite a bit off.
In the worst cases, they were off by as much as 470 miles!
That's like placing the Statue of Liberty in Detroit!
I have used the Garmin Mapsource program to correct the Nordic placemarks concerning the countries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
I have also added links to some good websites.

To all of you complaining about the wrong placement of your personal favourite World Heritage Site:
As I wrote here, the base data from UNESCO is probably wrong already, so there's nothing aladdin can really do about this, but wait for UNESCO.
Try my version there http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/79857/Main/38862 ,
it's a little bit more recent then aladdin's but no guarantee for correctness, too.
Or just contact UNESCO directly at http://whc.unesco.org , then let us know when the corrected data is available... They do respond to such requests, and are correcting misplaced coordinates.

You've done a really great job. It's wonderful to discover all the places which you have made available.
However it seems to be that some - especially the ones in Thailand, the country where I happen to live at the moment - of the placemarks are far out of place. For example the ancient city of Sukothai, Ayutthaya or in Laos the city "Luang Prabang" which actully lies next to the banks of the Mekong river but appears in GE in the middle of mountains.
If you need any assistance in correcting the coordinates, just let me know.

Take a look at the UNESCO site!
The new placemark (to the east) is the one currently listed by UNESCO. Aladdins placemarks are a little bit outdated now, as UNESCO already released a lot of corrections.
You might try my newer version in this post (I guess this is also the one, the new placemark was taken from).

Like so many other mass postings: Poor quality in the placing. The palace in Lhasa is about 100 kilometers off the mark.
nice effort, but poorly done. better try single placements or small series you can handle
|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||VanessYog||12/8/05 8:28 AM|
And also, like so many others, and almost all of your postings, this reply shows the mentality of our time: You want to get everything served on a silver platter, and once you get it, the only thing you can do is to complain if it isn't absolutely perfect.
Why don't you do some constructive work of your own, so the community can see, if your brain can keep what your mouth promises? Permanently criticizing others only helps if you can show, that you're up to it yourself.
So, let's see it!
|Re: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (All 788 of them!)||spitfire_mkv||12/10/05 8:18 AM|
Thank you vanessyog for your rebuttal to janberlin.
Janberlin's arrogant comments are unwarranted especially considering that Alladin had said: "As you find errors, please send me a message. If the error is an incorrect placement, it will help a lot if you can send me the correct latitude/longitude - as best you can determine!"
Alladin has undertaken a monumental task of assembling the UNESCO sites and placing them into GE of his/her own accord and should be (and has) been praised for their efforts and contribution.
A shift in your attitude, janberlin from that of selfish criticism to helpful courteousness would be in order. However, in a forum populated by hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe and a vast age demographic it's to be expected that their will be at least a few malcontents. Fortunately they do seem to be in the minority.
Lastly, janberlin, if you insist upon negative criticism of others at least have the originality to prepare different replies; and I quote your reply to ICAO Airport Codes: "Like so many other mass postings: Poor quality in the placing. The airfield in Lhasa is about 10 kilometers off the mark.
nice effort, but poorly done. Better try single placements or small series you can handle." hmm...sound familiar?

Just found your site.
Amazing patience to get all of the placemarks.
Don't worry about the negative postings.
If the posters had any manners they'd acknowledge the work you've done and then offer the correction as positive feedback. Such is the world though.
Can't be bad if 122,000 people have visited.
It would be great if GE allowed you to attach a placemark to a Personal Message. Then we could send direct and it wouldn't look so negative.
It seems the only way to tell someone where to find something or a correct location is either to put it into a public forum, which most people won't be interested in, or to ask for an external e-mail address.

This placemark is not in the correct place - it is too far south. The headquarters for the Okapi reserve are (were?) located in the town of Epulu, where the Epulu river meets the main E-W "highway" (the transcontinental highway, for some years mostly impassable in this area other than by foot). Epulu and the headquarters are at the southernmost boundary of the park, which extends to the north of this road and on the western banks of the Nduye river (if you look closely, the small tributary branching off of the Epulu river to the north). There is a separate placemark that is located roughly in the midst of the reserve and is correct - this placemark should be removed.

In the case of the Chhtrapati Shivaji Rail Terminus( formerly known as the Victoria Terminus) in South Mumbai, India, you have placed your placemark at the waters edge roughly in the north-east corner of the very popular Appolo Pier, in the area some 450 feet north of the Gateway of India.
The actual C. S. T. is 1.85 kms. to the north, clearly marked by many placemarks and Panaramio photos, and clearly recognisable by anyone familiar with Mumbai; the GE pointer shows it at 18 * 56' 23.7" N and 72* 50' 6.41" E . and clearly visible on GE.
The Qutub Minar in Delhi, India, is also 'placed' wrong; the actual position of the monument is some 0.90 kms. north-west of your placemark and the GE pointer shows it at 28* 31' 27.64" N and 77* 11' 07.69" E and very clearly visible on GE.
Mughal Emperor Humayun's Tomb (father of Akbar the Great), is also 'placed' wrong, the actual monument clearly visible on GE, the pointer at 28*35" 35.98 N and 77* 15" 02.72"E. Your wrong placemark is some 1.03 kms. south.
The world famous Taj Mahal, in Agra, is also 'placed' wrong; the actual monument, very clearly visible on GE, and on the pointer 27*10'29.66" N and 78* 02' 31.55" E, with your placemark some 1.23 kms south west of the actual location.
Agra Fort, again very clearly visible on GE, is 'placed' wrongly on the east bank of the Yamuna river instead of the west bank, on pointer 27*10' 42.45 " N and 78* 01' 23.49" E (this I have actually pinpointed on the garden opposite the Diwan i Khas [Audience Hall for Commoners in the fort] as the fort itself has a very large area.) Your placemark is some 1.28kms east of the Fort and on Yamuna's opposite bank.
Again, the world famous Ajanta caves are 'placed' wrong over the town adjoining the caves; the actual caves clearly visible on GE, are carved along a steep slope of the flat hills to the west of the placemark.
When I saw your placemark for the Old Churches and Convents of Old Goa (Velha Goa), one of the most spiritually stimulating places in the world.........................
the placemark is on the banks of the river Mandovi in the correct area of the churches, but a trifle off from the main sacred area, I realise that the time you did your monumental work, the GE on these places may have been in low resolution and/ or the places are wrongly sited by the World Heritage website.

You point to the wrong church in Congonhas-MG, Brazil. You point to the Igreja Matriz de N. S. da Conceição, the church you want to point to is the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Congonhas.
The correct location is over here: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php?Number=1255493
The church of your placemark is located on the other side of the valley. In front of the Igreja Matriz de N. S. da Conceição you have a nice view of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Congonhas, but your placemark is on the backside.

I'm looking for a UNESCO Tentative List site named Jaggadala Vihara which is located in Bangladesh. It is supposedly located near the World Heritage Site of Somapura Mahavira, or Paharapur (N25 01 52.07, E88 58 36.95), but I cannot precisely locate it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
