|Satellite images of Mississippi coast||BennJay||8/31/05 3:16 PM|
New satellite images of the MS coastline are available at
I've tried to do an overlay but placement is difficult. The area shown is the Army/Navy Retirement Center where Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel rode out the storm.
I hope others with more GE talent can improve on this effort. The entire MS coastline is available, and it would be great to see more proficient GE users assemble this so that those who had to evacuate could see their area easily.

Check out this Spanish Bay Location from the .gov site you posted, and than fly to this PM in GE and look!

|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||noen||9/1/05 12:32 AM|
I've done overlays for 7 photos in Bay Louis and 1 at the harbor in Gulfport. Feel free to add on to this putting in the mass of other images available.
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||natemagee||9/1/05 10:12 AM|
This is amazing stuff and great images...I'd just note, as the noaa article explains, these aren't satellite images, they're aerial photos taken from 7500 ft. I also think that the noaa server with all these images has crashed. They say they're moving them over to a better server, hopefully soon!
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||number1fan||9/1/05 11:15 AM|
Great Job on the overlays!
It is just amazing the force of Katrina..
Our Hearts and prayers go out to the affected people.
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||obrian||9/1/05 1:29 PM|
I just took the freedom to make up an overlay from the image you posted. I hope I got it all straight, this is my first one
I uploaded the image to imageshack, the noaa.gov site seems to be too busy atm.
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||hismerecry||9/1/05 1:36 PM|
found some more images to overlay with: http://digitalglobe.com/images/katrina/new_orleans_msi_aug31_2005_dg.jpg
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||natemagee||9/1/05 1:37 PM|
There is a new noaa site that seems to be working now:
|New Orleans - overlay||obrian||9/1/05 2:39 PM|
Thanks for that link, seems to be one of the most interesting areas, here´s the overlay. I can´t actually say "enjoy", but hope it maybe helps someone.

|Re: Satellite images of MS coast, Long Beach HS||natemagee||9/1/05 4:18 PM|
Here's an overlay I did that includes Long Beach High School. The damage isn't nearly as bad as south of the RR tracks, but you can still see lots of roof damage and downed trees. I was trying to check on my Grandma's house and business (corner of Klondyke and Commission) which is just about 500 yards north of this picture's edge...dang. Maybe NOAA will continue to add images inland. She's in Baton Rouge & wants to know about her home, but doesn't feel safe trying to get in here yet. Here is the source:

I'm very sorry, I tried to attach the .KMZ before; I'm not sure what happened. I hope it works here.

Here are three I just layed in from the NOAA website...
|Re: 20 Overlays||psylant||9/1/05 6:56 PM|
Just going to throw a few links in this thread (it's getting awesome traffic) of New Orleans NOAA Overlays I threw together.
5 Overlays north of the airport in Kenner, and 15 overlays on the northeast side of the city.
They're broken up into files of 5 overlays each. Please reply if this is too much for you, I'll break them down further.
|DigiGlobe Image of Flooded New Orleans||Mike_H||9/1/05 9:09 PM|
I have attached a kmz file with a link to a DigiGlobe image of flooded New Orleans and approximate locations of levee breaks. I have placed the image imperfectly by hand as I don't have the Professional version that lets you use GIS image data.
If you use this kmz, be patient as it links you to a roughly 4 MB aerial photo!

Can we get detailed overlays of old Metairie? Beginning of Metairie rd near Metairie grammar school.
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||Fayde||9/2/05 7:33 PM|
These overlays ... how can they be viewed in the Google Earth software? I downloaded one of the *.kmz files and it opened the software but then stated "image not found".
Little help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me how to use the Google Earth Satellite page to look at updated photos (to see property damage) from the hurricane? It is supposed to be updated every single hour b/c of Hurricane Katrina and I can only see pictures of before the hurricane. Please help. I dont know how to use this site yet so could you please email me at ilovejesu...@hotmail.com
I might be able to figure this out. Thanks.
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||msgirl38111||9/2/05 9:50 PM|
AngelLeah, I'm in same boat. I have dozen + New Orleans evacuees in my home all desperate for looks at their homes and workplaces. I see the Orleans overlay but I don't know how to get the best views for them on specific houses/buildings. MSGirl38111

FYI - These are not satellite imagery, they are Aerial Photography flown by NOAA's National Geodetic Survey, Remote Sensing Division.

Any Gulf Breeze, FL?

I've moved your overlay a little bit and I've changed the photo URL
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||Minnie35||5/10/06 10:34 AM|
Thanks for the pics! I lived in an area that experienced devastating hurricanes- the first streets are permanently underwater and estates, condos and beaches are gone. But to see the before and after illustrated like this is very effective.
Where I was, the condos and homes went right back up along the new beach front and a few years later they were destroyed too. Hopefully the rebuilding plan will be better than in many hurricane prone cities! Take care!
|Re: Satellite images of Mississippi coast||vulture38||5/20/06 2:25 AM|
Just thought i'd let you know that the 7 photos you've overlayed on the MS Gulf coast are in Pass Christian, not Bay St Louis.
