Marj Weir 12/03/30 11:32 I am using the free CSE to allow searching of several hundred PDF's on my website.  It works well except that the results are in random order. The names of the PDF's are regular (SD_Times1970_04.pdf, SD_Times1970_05.pdf, etc).  I would like the result
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/02 21:29 According to documentation, the "Sort by Attribute" feature currently "requires that the field [on which you're sorting] has a numerical interpretation, such as numbers and dates." https://developers.google.com/custom-search/docs/structured_search#s

Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/03 15:51 Is there a Google sitemapper app that I should be using?  I have been using CoffeeCup Software's Sitemapper program which produces a sitemap.html and sitemap.xml.  The sitemap.xml contains the kinds of entries you describe, but it does not take <Page
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/03 16:22 Sorry, I don't know if any Sitemap generator software yet available can create PageMaps. Could you edit the sitemap.xml file and add the PageMaps by hand, using a text editor (such as Notepad in Windows, or TextEdit on a Mac, or other text editing s
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/04 16:15 I have the tools (XML notepad) to do that, but not the savvy.  I'm not sure whether to add an Attribute, an Element or something else.  Can you recommend an XML book? Thanks.
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/04 19:13 For now I'll leave any book recommendations to others -- but I think you can get started easily enough right away.  Let's start with your current XML Sitemap: http://sdtimes.org/sitemap.xml Please save the file on your computer so that you can edit
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/06 21:31 Thanks for your patience and thoroughness, OMR!  I actually used Notepad doing what you have outlined, but chickened out when I then tried to view it in xmlnotepad and it threw an error message.  Perhaps that doesn't really matter.  I think it happen
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/28 21:58 I have now modified (an renamed) my sitemap so that each of the 309 pdf's has a Pagemap like the one you suggested with an appropriate date.  I have uploaded it and requested on-demand indexing based on the sitemap.  Is there any rule of thumb about
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/29 18:46 Sorry, I don't know why your PageMaps have not yet been successfully processed. Some quick tests seem to indicate that a few of your PageMaps might have taken effect, but apparently most have not.  I don't know why not. If you wish to post a link t
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/29 19:12 BTW ... I'm sorry to report that I've noticed another issue that may affect many of your search results. Many search result titles have been taken from various headlines found in the newsletters (instead of actual titles of the newsletters).  This
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/30 13:30 The reason that the titles are different is that the publication was originally named "The Paper" and then briefly "The Neighborhood Paper" and then in 1984 changed to "The Times of Skinker DeBaliviere."  These issues were all scanned and then OCR'd
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/04/30 13:39 I wonder if this is just the result of the indexing process only doing the first 200 URLS?  There are page URLs and thn 309 PDF URLs. I couldn't make the link work, so I'm attaching the file:  googlesitemap.xml   It resides in the public_html directo
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/30 16:02 Please correct an error in your Sitemap (googlesitemap.xml) on line 2252:   <PageMap xmlns="http://www.google.9com/schemas/sitemap-pagemap/1.0"> Notice the "9" in "www.google.9com".  Please delete that "9". Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/30 16:09 Trying to find out how many of your PageMaps have been successfully processed, I have submitted test queries specifying publication dates by year.  For example, this query for 1971 yields just 2 results (of the 9 expected). http://www.google.com/cse
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/04/30 16:13 BTW: This minor suggestion likely won't impact the aforementioned issue, but (for other reasons, and based on some past experience testing some older CSEs) I will ask you to please try this anyway: On the Basics page of the CSE control panel, pleas

Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/05/01 0:04 Sorry I overlooked these two minor issues in your Sitemap.  I think these are not critical, but you may want to fix them anyway. Please find the Sitemap entry for: http://sdtimes.org/files/Download/SD_Times1978_02.pdf That entry's PageMap has 2 iden
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/05/01 4:48 You've observed that the existing limitation on the processing of your PageMaps could be related to the indexing quota.  Most of your quota may have been already in use at the time when you submitted the revised Sitemap with added PageMaps. As an ex
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/01 13:33 Thanks for catching those errors.  I have corrected them. (I was nearly cross-eyed by the time I had made all those edits!)I have fixed them and reloaded the Sitemap. Shall I wait a day or two before I ask for on-line indexing again?
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/01 13:36 How can I get the other 109 documents indexed?  Does that happen over time?  I'm unclear about how that works.Marj
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/05/01 14:27 At the time of this post, test queries indicate that 44 of your PageMaps have now been indexed. Since such slow progress may be related to gradual restoration of the indexing quota, I've suggested a "shortcut" -- you could create a new CSE (so that
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/01 22:16 An intriguing approach.  I'll try it.Thanks again.Marj
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? KW Ora 12/05/03 4:52 Is it possible to use this on a CSE that's searching across multiple sites? I'm new to the CSE tool and I find the docs good (not great) with What but very thin on Why? As in why choose one "folk" in implementation over another? I feel as if I'm goin
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/07 23:21 Hi, OMR,I followed your instructions, creating two search engines and two sitemaps.  I have requested that indexes be created by sitemap for each one.  Little time has passed, so I don't know what's been done yet.  It's been less than 24 hours.   How
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? omr 12/05/08 1:01 Sorry but I think such variations in page-numbering can arise from a longstanding known issue.  At this time I don't know of any provided solution. From previous discussions we can be sure that Google is aware of the issue. (I submitted a related q
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/08 14:16 Thanks, OMR,That's useful to know.  I thought perhaps I had done something wrong (the more likely case).Marj
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/05/09 13:15 I am accepting defeat on this effort as I could never get the separated searches to work properly.  I was getting incomplete results (as in 1 result where there should be pages full).  I must be satisfied with random output which appears more thoroug

I'm sorry that you could not obtain consistently complete results with sorting enabled. On further testing I
Re: Can I cause the CSE to sort the results of a search by the names of the PDF's found? Marj Weir 12/09/10 12:17 I have upgraded from the free CSE to the $100 level in hopes that will give me better indexing results including sorting the results by publication date ( in the sitemap Pagemap for each PDF).  So far the indexing is better but the results are still
