|Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||SUPERMOTTA||4/17/12 10:19 PM|
For the past few months, pages on Chrome have become unresponsive with more and more frequency... at first it was once a week, then twice, now it's every day, multiple times a day, to the point where I can barely use the browser anymore.
I'm a big fan of Chrome and would like to resolve this rather than switch to Firefox.
I've tried going through all the steps described in the Troubleshooting guide (here: https://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95669 ) but nothing worked.
Any other potential suggestions?
One site that keeps crashing for me, constantly, is google maps, if I try to switch from Car mode to Walk mode, for instance.

This is constantly happening now for me too...
I'm going to have to head back to firefox soon.. its driving me nuts
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||mads1453||4/25/12 11:42 AM|
I am also having the same problem. Frequently with google pages (gmail, calendar, docs, etc.). Other tabs that I have open don't seem to have the same problem. So I don't think it's because caused by an extension I'm using.
Any other ideas?

I'm also having the same issue....has anyone's issue been resolved yet?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||doomspace||4/30/12 8:20 PM|
I'm having that same problem and it is ridiculous. I also have Win 7 64bit, 4gb RAM, and dual core processors. Not even these performance specs can speed up Chrome. Google needs to fix this!!!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||benjom||5/1/12 3:47 PM|
There is no help until google executives decide ti fire all the ingeniers working on google crome. It is ridiculous how many problems and bugs the new versions have. It is very slow. It took 45 sec. to open google crome support page. It took 2 minutes to open google.com page and was never able to open it. Two weeks ago, somehow I found online the two years old version which worked just fine, until crome updated it self. Hellooooo people from google. let us use the old version without silently updating until you make better this f...ing browser
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive, wont quit.||manshms||5/1/12 5:25 PM|
I have a similar problem that started a week ago, regardless of what I am doing in the browser. Chrome will not shut down and the spinning wheel just keeps spinning. I have to use "Force Quit". I even uninstalled it completely and reinstalled it and I still have the same problem.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||apebaybi||5/2/12 7:28 AM|
I also have this problem which is so annoying.I thought it was my crappy computer cos its not got loads of memory and had couple of years.On reading this page i can see its a problem with quite a few and not just me.Nothing can be done about it then?Its a shame cos this is my first time using google,i had firefx before and am seriously considering switching back cos i never had this kind of problem with firefox.
This really needs looking at!

I've had the same problem too and for quite a while. Please all you bods at Google Chrome, get this sorted because it's getting on my nerves now.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive, wont quit.||samealso||5/11/12 9:52 AM|
Add me to the list. I am ready to move to another browser as well if it is not fixed soon. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which sites, rather it seems to happen with any site.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive, wont quit.||JB2unique||5/11/12 10:00 AM|
dear goog, plain and simple, automatic updates are fine, give us the option to click yes update now, no update later. not difficult at all. oh, and have someone troll these boards and reply to your users you lazy billionaires.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Waidesworld||5/26/12 2:35 PM|
It's very annoying and with all the "how great is Google" fanfare, there are those annoying factors called silent updates. However, my biggest peeve is how a company this rich in software skills can roll out a product a la Microshaft. Had Gaggle (sic) decided that there is no need for Quality Assurance any more?
More bugs in this version than the whole of Florida!

Same thing happening to me.Before that I had the problem of the back button not working.I went back to Safari.Apple is coming out with it's next operating system,Mountain Lion. Hopefully they upgrade the brower too.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Moumo||5/27/12 12:33 PM|
The site that my Chrome keeps crashing on is Facebook. I can't do anything! It took me a long time to switch to Chrome because I was a huge firefox fan. But now I'm going to switch back.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||JB2unique||5/27/12 12:38 PM|
To my understanding, from gmail to Facebook, it is Java that has been problem. Next time the Chrome browser starts to act like a drunken sailor, disable Java and notice the difference of performance.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||sbanicki||5/27/12 3:50 PM|

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||sbanicki||5/27/12 3:51 PM|
reduce the number of bookmarks on your bookmark bar.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||SweetMagic||5/29/12 12:11 AM|
Yo - just adding to the set. Having same problem. Chrome has become rubbish and un-usuable. BBC, Facebook, even the damn weather. Java issues make sense - but then if you disable Javayou'll lose much more functionality across many more sights am I right in thinking?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||BoomerKid||5/29/12 4:53 AM|
Kept crashing..I finally gave up & went back to Firefox...I love Chrome...but it's such a hassle to have..
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||coloursandcats||5/29/12 8:38 AM|
Interesting suggestion but could do with a a bit more information, eg. how many bookmarks on the bookmark bar is too many? How many did you have and how many did you reduce to?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Scout37||6/3/12 6:02 AM|
THis just started happening to me yesterday. First i would go to a page with some kind of video on it, like you tube, and then i would get a message saying shockwave flash has stopped working. about a minute later, the page would stop responding, and a minute after that chrome itself would stop. i switched to chrome after getting a redirect virus that wouldnt leave on internet explorer and prefering it over firefox, but if this isnt resolved, i may not have another option.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||tim gibber||6/5/12 6:48 AM|
This keeps happening to me too. Often when I first open Chrome it can't deal what should be it's normal job.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Waidesworld||6/7/12 4:01 PM|
This seems to all have happened to me in the last month. Two of my PC's are on Firefox, this one on Chrome and technically it's the fastest of the three. Well Chrome, you are killing me. Glad I didn't uninstall Firefox!

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Widebob||6/12/12 7:48 AM|
i'm having this problem constantly on my mac. i like to open multiple pages then read them sequentially. after reading a few, the rest have become unresponsive. seems this problem has been around for a while without being fixed, so i assume google is uninterested. alas, back to firefox for me. at least i can be productive with firefox.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||07Macca||6/13/12 12:50 PM|
me too - today.
One by one I have closed different tabs to see if there was a clash or whatever, but no good.
Problem is, I only moved to Chrome a few weeks ago as my response time on FF was aeons, it takes about 3-4 mins just to open & become responsive...
What now? Safari?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||bigshawnmack||6/13/12 2:13 PM|
Same thing has been happening here. I'm using Chrome 19.0.1084.56, on a MacBook Pro, and the Aw Snap occurs whenever I try to open up multiple tabs in order to read articles on such sites as Facebook, The Huffington Post, even Google search results give me the same issue. It's annoying, and any and all manners of fixes aren't helping solve the problem. I'm about at the end of my rope and am ready to get rid of Chrome altogether...
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||JB2unique||6/13/12 2:56 PM|
Chrome is no longer a good working browser since update 19. It's been more sluggish and cannot handle more than two tabs. If you have a lot of bookmarks, Chrome is definitely not your browser. I find myself killing pages more often than ever, simple pages that does not have a load of images or flash or videos; still chrome cannot handle it. With all its processes, you think its a more stable and reliable browser but fails.
Maybe its the java, but it's all the tracking and all the intellipedia sharing of user information that's been going on these last couple of years. Who knows, at this point I don't care for Chrome as it isn't for those who want to be productive.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Don'tDoThisToMeChrome||6/14/12 8:27 PM|
Same thing has been happening to me, I thought I was the only one, was going crazy! Please fix this, I love Chrome, don't want to change. Gotta be honest thought past few versions been kinda shitty.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Loquationo||6/17/12 12:39 PM|
It's just been the last few weeks that I've been noticing this but it's fairly consistent now. Suddenly I will be unable to input anything into form fields, or scroll the page, and will have to resort to re-opening the page in a new tab. It's quite distracting and jarring. Chrome has been my favorite browser over the last year but if I can't get this fixed I'm going to switch back to Firefox or Opera. I was thinking it might be related to some of the add-ons but I haven't noticed any changes by removing them one at a time. Which I really don't want to do b/c the add-on functionality is one of Chrome's strong points, for me. If a definitive solution is determined, I hope to find it out, soon.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Widebob||6/17/12 1:55 PM|
well, this has been going on with chrome for months now, with no response from google and no solid ideas how to fix it. folks, i think we've been had. don't know whether google cares if we all migrate away from chrome now, but that is my plan. i'm sure loss of my advocacy won't bother google, which is probably why they are taking no action. i'm voting with my feet. bye!

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||memphis_chickenhead||6/19/12 10:41 AM|
Well I am now using FF to send this message, Chrome is unusable and pointless and really disappointing that no executive from Google is prepared to say anything about the number of users having issues, It seems its the same old story, deny everything until the share price goes down and then claim that they didn't know there was a problem.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||DeborahLee||6/19/12 1:50 PM|
So strange, why is it only happening to some of us and on some pages? For this post, I am on Chrome, but I'm keeping firefox open at the same time for sites that won't load. Any response from Google on this?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||07Macca||6/19/12 2:05 PM|
this was only happening on my work machine not home one (both macBook Pros) which I found odd.
At work, I closed each tab one-by-one (maybe having over 30 open didn't help to start) and then eventually sht down the machine (over the weekend).
It's been fine since....
Maybe it was a clash with hardware?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Widebob||6/19/12 2:19 PM|
im not aware that it only happens on some pages. i use it with lots of windows open mostly on huff post, but i really doubt its a website-related problem. as for google weighing in on this, i've seen nothing, with many, many posts by affected users. i think you have to take that as meaning "not interested". no words. no action. the number of people affected must not elevate this to a problem google wants to work on.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||nnd||6/19/12 10:00 PM|
This is happening to me - no matter what I have open. I can have as little as one tab (gmail or Facebook) open or 7-10 and it will be unresponsive with the spinning wheel and then the pop-up to kill pages. Sometimes it goes as far as not even recongizing the force-quit command and I have to hard re-boot my MacBook which is only 3 years old and has been in perfect condition until this starting happening about three weeks ago.
At work I have a HP laptop and Chrome doesn't have nearly as many issues - it becomes unresponsive about 2 times a day on average. For my MacBook it's about 5-7 times in an hour or two AND forces me to restart completely. So frustrating!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||iamjumbo||6/27/12 4:39 AM|
that has been happening to me constantly. it is impossible to go on youtube using chrome. a video will play properly, then the second one will freeze up the entire thing, and the only way to get out of it is to restart the computer.
i don't care for ie, and do use firefox but all of my bookmarks are on chrome. that sucks
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||SamSpaaza||6/27/12 5:31 AM|
Is there any way to generate a text list of extensions installed in Chrome? Then we can post them here and see if there's anything in common.

Googel chrome has started doing this on my computer as well. Fresh install of Win7 Internet explorer does not do it at all. Looks like I will be switching back to firefox.
That will not be a problem for me at all because Google chrome is a shit browser. One thing I noticed is that it doesn't scroll smoothly at all...it jumps. I've compared it to IE and IE is soooo much smoother.

Decided to experiment with it a little. Killed chrome with task manager, and after a few minutes started it up again. This time I did not do anything after opening, just let it sit on the new tab page. (Chose not to restore previous pages). After 10 minutes tried to open a new tab and it froze up.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||victorsmiller||8/4/12 8:31 PM|
I have a mac book pro 13" from the middle of 2009. I had been happily using google chrome without problem, until about 4 or 5 months ago when I updated the OS to Lion. Since then, I'll run chrome and things are ok for a while. If I put my MBP to sleep by closing the cover, chrome will work after I wake it up, but after 1/2 hour or so it will become non-responsive, or sometimes my WiFi will die, and then the MBP locks up completely and I have to power it off. I always run Disk Utility after I start it up again to make sure that nothing has been damaged, which fortunately it hasn't. I've tried looking at permissions in /var/folder subdirectory. I tried disabling Chrome internal flash player in favor of Adobe's plugin. And I even ran
sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
which was suggested on some web site. Meantime I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, but the problem is still there. I know that there is a problem relating to the new MBP hardware, but was told that that shouldn't have affected me. Any suggestions? Right now I'm running one of the Chrome developer editions Version 22.0.1221.0 dev, but haven't run it long enough to see it the problem has been solved.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||victorsmiller||8/6/12 5:39 AM|
The problem is still there. I left my Mac Book Pro 13" on last night, but it went to sleep. When I woke it up I found that the wifi was screwed up -- I could reach the files on my Windows 7 desktop, but couldn't reach any disks connected to my Airport Extreme. I also couldn't reach my Apple TV. I tried shutting down, but Chrome wouldn't quit, so I force killed it, and then shut down. After rebooting things are working ok. Again, this sort of stuff never happened before about 4 or 5 months ago when I started running Lion. It looks like I'm orphaned, because neither google nor apple is interested in tracking down a bug with related to machines that are two years old :-(.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||NikoNiko||8/12/12 4:40 AM|
Same here. This is happening on my Macbook Pro at home and a PC at work. I don't think it's my hardware. This problem has been going on for at least a month. Have tried disabling Flash but to no avail. Facebook in particular freezes a lot. I can almost guarantee if I've got 3 or more tabs open, one of them will cease to be scrollable.

Same issue here Chrome laggy and unresponsive, have use the task manager to force close it, nothing seemed to help until I disabled the java plugin, now it is lighting fast again and no issues. To disable the plugin open Chrome paste this into the URL
click the Disable link and close and then open Chrome and you should be right as rain.

I have a similar problem and was hoping you could help. I just recently updated my Macbook to Mac OS X lion (10.7) and before that my chrome was working fine. When it was done downloading and I installed it I tried to open Google Chrome. All I got was a blank white screen and when i googled something random like "google" it wold show a loading icon. A message pops up after a minute or two of waiting as read, "The following page(s) have become unresponsive. You can wait for them to become responsive or kill them." I never had this problem before I upgraded to Lion (10.7) and I cannot figure out why this is only effecting my Chrome browser and not my Firefox or Safari. It be great if you could help.

Same thing here. Facebook is the most frequent culprit. Maybe Google is giving us a gentle hint that we ought to try Google+. Putting on my Madame Cleo hat, I would predict that Chrome would not behave that way on Google+.

This may be a resolution for some. I'm using Aps for business and have had this issue intermittently for a while. In a nutshell...After much experimenting, I turned off Google+ for all users on my domain a day ago. Chrome has back to it's good old self since then.

I have been also having this issue frequently mostly with gmail and google reader loading the images and then freezing completely. But other websites are touch and go with working. I love chrome but its getting to be unusable. I haven't changed any settings or added anything to my chrome browser.

Chrome would get unresponsive for me too. Happens most often when opening chrome while it restores my opened tabs.
Can't close tabs or exit chrome, but I can still switch around tabs or navigate the menus. My cpu goes to 25% (quad core) and I would have force kill chrome via task manager.

Hey Google Guys, do you even work? Or do you just come in once in a while to do a quick Google Chrome "update" and then skip out again? It's hard to understand why such a problem would go unresolved for so long.
I started having problems the first week of August. First got the "Aw Snap" message a few times a day, then more often, now pages are unresponsive, won't scroll down pages, videos wont' load, pictures don't display, and I don't get "Aw Snap" anymore, just shuts down. Over and over, and over. And over.
I can't understand why they just don't fix it.

To follow up on my prior post, I'm now only noticing this on one Ubuntu-based installation; the Kubuntu 12.04 installation on my laptop hasn't experienced Chromium lock-ups so far. I'm suspecting that in my case this might be an incompatibility with LXDE (which is odd for Chromium being the default browser in Lubuntu...).
I also noticed that there is an active bug report filed with the Chromium project, so at least this is being looked at.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||publicsp||9/18/12 8:10 AM|
Have been an early adopter and enthusiastic promoter of Chrome ever since the product was first released, but now find myself moving to Firefox for all the reasons mentioned in this discussion.
Chrome has become resource hungry, unacceptably unresponsive and unreliable.
It makes no sense that a company like Google would progressively make this product worse, instead of better.
I have never been a Firefox user, always used Internet Explorer before Chrome, but
yesterday (after weeks of endless frustration with Chrome and good user experience experimenting with Firefox), I configured Firefox to be my primary browser.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Poettone||9/19/12 12:41 PM|
I have also been on board with Chrome since it's release, moving totally away from Firefox(which is also a great browser) As of the last couple of months, chrome worked perfectly. Since then, mind you no changes on my end, it started locking up whenever I had more than one tab open. The second and successive pages would not even respond to typing clicking or anything. I decided to remove and re-install and the problem continues. I had leaving Chrome in the dust, but this issue really needs resolved.
I'm sure they will find a fix for it, or at least reply with something, but maybe we are in the wrong place to file our complaint. Before totally moving I will look around for a forum or maybe email them directly, not sure how yet, but it might be worth a shot.

It would be helpful if there were step by step instructions geared towards every-day users lime me to fix this issue. I really like Chrome, and would like to continue using it on Android and Mac.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||CthulhuArises||9/25/12 7:47 AM|
This is has been the same for me. I had a few issues here and there, nothing that I laid blame on Chrome for in the beginning, but rather on my internet. Then I blamed switching internet companies when I moved. As I got desperate, I started using my secondary browsers: Firefox, SeaMonkey, Opera and Safari. All four load the pages with no trouble. It seemed to get better about the second week in September, but it's back to no rhyme or reason as to the pages it won't load. Heck, it won't load half your google pages. Gmail, basic searches, it's beginning to get a little ridiculous. I noticed that things in your PC forum tend to get noticed and taken care of faster - as I checked those back when I first had issues looking for any kind of solution. Hopefully this gets at least told you're looking into it soon.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||MarsR||9/28/12 2:26 PM|
I've been having this problem for quite some time and it is very frustrating. But I have a workaround (at least it works for me.) Whenever a page hangs, I just re-size the window a little and it magically loads the page. Works great till I go on to the next page and have to do it again...
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||bajacalla||9/28/12 3:59 PM|
I switched last year to Firefox from Safari on my Mac because Safari was wonky. earlier this year, Firefox started to wonk out, so I switched to Chrome. several weeks ago, I noticed that Chrome was not working on some sites with multiple pages - it wouldn't switch pages. on Monday, it will no longer open up online game pages. it's completely unacceptable to have to switch browsers just to visit my favorite sites.
goodbye, Chrome. I'll be going back to Safari now.

Found everything ok, it's only that Google Reader turns out slowing down Chrome/Iron dramatically. Read this:

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||benissimo||10/2/12 4:29 AM|
I found that disabling the Flash plugin solved the problem for me.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||nik c||10/4/12 2:21 AM|
Happens to me now since the lasts update 2-3 weeks ago. The funny (?) thing isthat it happens MOST when I try to work on google doc spreadsheets: Suddenly kjeyboard will become unresponsive and even a cell is selected for input it is like the keyboard does not exist. I switch to another tab, and entry into e.g. form fields works as expected.
But more and more I am discovering that this behaviour happens on alls sorts of pages - they simply become unresponsive: sometimes I can't scroll them anymore, sometimes I can't enter into formfields, sometimes both, etc.
GOOGLE please fix this, or I (and hundreds of my colleagues, as CHROME is our company browser and and we use Google -mail and apps internally) will switch.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Farnyboy||10/7/12 10:11 AM|
It's been happening to me for about 3 weeks now where i'm getting to the point that it's going through the window any minute.
Then suddenly every things ok.
I've done all the checks that i know including restoring to an earlier date.
But within 30 mins or so i get the Aw Snap! again
I'll be going back to Firefox if it carries on.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||silentstawk||10/13/12 8:40 AM|
Add me to the list as well. The weird thing is, I am at my workplace right now, and Google chrome is working 100% to perfection just like i remember it on my home computer. However on my home computer chrome absolutely does not work one bit. I don't get it... that kind of issue sounds like a problem with my computer not the browser, but all my other browsers work fine and I've gone through all the steps to fix it and nothing. Even worse is that Chrome DID work for like 1 day, then it didn't at all. How about an update to FIX things instead of break them? ;)

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||blksands||10/19/12 3:33 AM|
Such a shame that what once used to be a great browser is now reduced to a piece of crap, all I get is spinning circles on the tabs and it is so slow it's not funny..,. guess google wants to go the same destructive route as zynga and fb... fix the damm thing, put it back to where the damm thing used to work this browser is now as bad as IE and FF if not worst
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Vic360||10/19/12 4:06 AM|
Have you completely re-installed chrome from scratch? Does it work without any addon/extensions? Those tend to be the common source of issues. For me the HTTPS everywhere extension from EFF was causing it.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||TheAtheistReverend||10/28/12 1:47 PM|
I agree Google is screwing themselves by not addressing this issue.
THE FIX I USE is to DISABLE THE FLASH PLUGIN in chrome/chromium: type "chrome:plugins" in your address bar and click disable under flash. Easy.
But this shouldn't be necessary, and now things like multiple file uploaders for facebook don't work. Inconvenient, but I will still use Chromium as my default. Just stay annoyed and occasionally write angry comments.
I still say this is unacceptable, Google.

Hi, new to this group. Actually just joined to find a cure for my "unresponsive pages". Ironic, eh? Is there no real cure? And if there was would it be posted in this thread someday? Tx. BB
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||TheAtheistReverend||11/1/12 1:46 PM|
hopefully, if there is a cure, you'll find it here. I think it is most likely Google will either fix the issue, or flash will eventual be replaced with html5 and we'll have "outgrown" the problem without ever solving it.
until then, I have flash disabled.

this may b helpful!!
right click on google chrome-properties- at the end of the text box for "target" field , give a space after chrome.exe and paste "-no-sandbox" and press ok
for page kill in chrome and in general for pages that become unresponsive, there,download TDSSkiller.exe from kaspersky lab ; install and run it.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||TheAtheistReverend||11/8/12 6:59 AM|
This is not applicable to my machine. I am running linux.
"Linux is not vunerable to MS Windows exploits. Almost all Linux distros are out of the box locked down & can't be harmed. Sorry but an AV for Linux is a waste of resources.
Said better by smarter folks.
"To write malware for linux would be insanely dificult. You have compile for ever distro and every posible setup. For example let's say you wrote a virus for Ubuntu 11.04 and I ran Ubuntu 11.04 but I used a more up to date libc or other library, your malware would fail instantly. The problem with Linux is that malware (if not compiled on that machine) will probably fail or be crippled. Not to mention almost all exploits against linux are Local access only (LAN, at the computer, RDP, SSH)"

When a page hangs, just re-size the window a little to get it going again.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||SamSpaaza||11/9/12 2:32 PM|
Resizing the window worked for me as well. In the end, however, I just deleted all the extensions I installed on a whim in the past (and don't ever use today). Then I deactivated the ones I only use occasionally like Awesome Screenshot and Google Analytics Debugger - I can always activate them when I need them.

I've been having this same issue for several days now, and after trying everything mentioned here I believe I found a solution to it on the following link:
The issue has not ocurred again after an hour of extensive testing, so I'm guessing it had something to do with a corrupt Chrome user profile. I hope this helps you all.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||bmwM5guy||11/15/12 3:12 PM|
You are exactly right. Java is the reason why everything is hanging up. Whenever I have Chrome up on my bankplus.net it takes forever to sign in because of Java. When I bring up IE8 and goto my bankplus.net account, it lets me sign in right away.
Google needs to seriously work on getting Java to work copacetic because it's EXTREMELY aggravating that I have to use IE8. I love Google Chrome but if you don't get this fixed, I'm switching browsers back to another browser and God forbid I have to use IE8 or FireCrapFox again.
|Re: I got 99 problems but Chrome ain't one||droach3||11/15/12 5:29 PM|
Tried it didn't work page still hung had to open another tab and then go back and it worked just like it had before. Still looking for a fix here GOOGLE! I hate IE and Firefox I will continue to suffer through this knowing that someday it will be fixed.

count me in... right now, I'm in the middle of completing my assignment and trust me, this page-crashing thing is totally getting into my nerves.. it feels like chrome doesn't allow me to finish my assignment whenever I try to open my fb (since I'm doing an online survey at fb).. feels like switching to Firefox/ IE although I'm not a big fan of them.. oh yeah, my sister is also facing the same problem but hers is worst!! chrome didn't load the pages although she has been hooked up to the wireless and it also doesn't allow me to uninstall it (since I think it may work when uninstall and re-install it back)..
p/s: I have cleared most of my browser history, check the router, use my broadband (just in case the loading pages took time due to low wireless internet signal).. what should I do now? my assignment is approaching dateline

I had the same problem of chrome crashing when in gmail, facebook etc. but i fixed the issue. the problem was with the the google talk plugin for chrome. once i disabled it everything went back to normal. an i just installed the standalone google talk application on my taskbar.
To uninstall the plugin enter the following in the address bar
this will open the plugins page
then disable the google talk plugin.

I think I got it! I did the chrome: extensions in the tool bar address thing and disabled 2 plugins: google talk and facebook talk to google. I didn't mess with flash. It seems to have worked! |Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||spynoodle||11/20/12 7:58 PM|
I also have this problem, although it only just started for me in Chrome 23. Not sure what causes it, although page re-sizing does not seem to help at all. It started for me after I re-installed Chrome, which I had to do because somehow my old install became corrupted after I restored a backup. Perhaps my profile is corrupted?

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||JasmineGreen||11/28/12 8:37 AM|
Gary, This does not work. In the video, the guy explains to disable the Google Flash plugin and leave the Adobe Flash plugin there. We've been through this. Many have tried that and it did not work.
I kept reporting the bug, and finally Google or Apple or Adobe did something that fixed it for me.I have not had this error in months.
How to report the bug:
Help menu: Report an Issue. Make sure to include a screen shot of the problem every time you report it. Report it every single time you get the error message. How to take a screen shot: Mac - Hold down Command-Shift-3. This takes a picture of your screen. Include this on your report. Windows - Press the Print Screen button.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Melinoe||12/9/12 6:38 PM|
I just recently got a computer with the Windows 8 OS. Over the course of 4 days Google Chrome became more and more unresponsive. I think this is terrible because I've always used Chrome. I returned the laptop believing it was defected. This is my second one of the same kind, it's the ENVY m4, and it's really good. Unfortunately I've encountered the same problem. When Chrome crashes it interferes with the other apps and the dreaded I.E browser that I've been forced to use as an alternative. I'm going to have to get rid of Chrome and download Firefox. Sorry to have to do that

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||spynoodle||12/15/12 2:12 PM|
It looks like the problem may be fixed for me by simply uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, although I'm not 100% sure yet. Leading up to the time I uninstalled Chrome, things were getting worse and worse; I couldn't even get the latest update to download! However, things seem to be fine now that I reinstalled. Of course, I'm now using a newer version, so perhaps Google fixed whatever was causing my problems in the first place.

Every time I open Google Chrome I get the unresponsive kill or wait message. I close it and reopen it and it is fine. Why? Is Google blaming all of us for the issue. It would be nice if they had live phone support. Live people are still better than searching a support site for people with the same unresolved problem. I am going back to IE. It may be older but it still works.

Same problem here, Chrome has been working seamlessly for a few years until the 24.0.1312.52 m update. I've uinstalled chrome, and every other google app i have, reinstalled, works for a few pages and then gets stuck on all new page loads "waiting for ....com" until i stop and restart the app. I've tried no logging into my account and pulling my plugins/bookmarks after a fresh install and it stills stops loading pages after a few minutes.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||northrupthebandgeek||1/19/13 11:02 AM|
@drmadcat: In my case when I had this issue it was a case of me needing to make sure my swap partition under Lubuntu was enabled (it wasn't for some reason, probably because it was spanning multiple drives) and - once I had edited fstab accordingly - my issue was fixed (indicating that somehow, Chromium was just running out of RAM).
That then brings up the question of why Chromium needed so much of my RAM; the machine I was having issues with had 2GB of physical RAM, only around 256MB of which (at the very most) was used by the OS.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Titus Ting||1/20/13 5:04 PM|
I just figure the reason why its keeps freezing and becomes unresponsive is because they say that the cause of it is "AppHangB1 Error." Anyone out there has endures unresponsive messages because of "AppHangBi Error."?

Me too. I can access sites via Firefox or Safari that I cannot via Chrome, so maybe I have malware that attacks Chrome? Sites that are unresponsive include TD Ameritrade, Gmail, iGoogle, Bloomberg.
The problem has gotten worse each day over that last two weeks.
Unresponsive sites and then Aw Snap.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||antish||1/23/13 4:39 AM|
Even I have the same problem, but it looks like Google doesn't care anymore. Well, then i guess all of us should switch to Firefox. (maybe even IE)
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Simon Lawrence||1/24/13 9:53 AM|
Yup, and I also thought it was my computer. The added irony is that Google's own browser messes up Google Docs users. I know it's all free, but free rubbish is still rubbish and ultimately gets put in the bin.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Simon Lawrence||1/24/13 9:59 AM|
And more irony is I pretty much abandoned IE because Chrome was so good. Have now had to go back to IE8, Safari or Firefox and Google is telling me to upgrade my browser "to a modern browser, such as Chrome". Well Google folks, if the choice is IE8 that works or Chrome which is now too slow to use, guess which choice I'd make?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||MarsR||1/24/13 1:59 PM|
I was having this problem and a few months ago found this thread. I read about people fixing the problem by disabling flash or other such things. Those things didn't fix my problem. But here is what I did: I pointed my chrome browser to chrome://plugins and disabled ALL of the plugins. Chrome started working. Next, I went through and enabled the plugins one at a time, testing chrome after each plugin was enabled. When I found the one that was causing the problem (for me it was Norton Confidential--might be different for someone else,) I disabled it again. After enabling all the other plugins and leaving the offending one disabled everything worked fine. And it has been working like new ever since. I don't know if this fix will help anyone else, but it is easy to do and I would certainly recommend you give it a try.

Yes. Did you read my post on Jan 24th?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||scottsolo||1/29/13 3:03 PM|
Yea. I have disabled all plugins that I do not use daily, I'm not willing to disable a plugin that I use... so I stopped there basically. The fact is, the problem doesn't exist on FireFox (same plugins), so Google should fix it, IMO.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||MarsR||1/29/13 3:17 PM|
Since you didn't disable all of the plugins, I guess we still don't know if that is causing the problem or if it something else altogether. It would have been nice to know...
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||rchthemaster||1/29/13 3:29 PM|
I disabled everything but Mcafee Site Advisor on mine (it ran fine before with it) and I still see the problem. Either way, we shouldn't have to disable all add ons just to get a stable Chrome. The add ons are there to make it better, not immobilize it. IMO, the add ons aren't the problem because I only had one going that worked before and it would still stop sessions. It has to be something else. Come on Google. Fix this soon.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||scottsolo||1/29/13 3:32 PM|
I mean I'm all for troubleshooting, but that would take me weeks to get through all the plugins. Not to mention the unresponsiveness is completely random (or seemingly, at least). So I just have to wait a few days and if i didnt see a problem "assume" that it is fixed. I'm just not interested in spending my time doing that, but I'll report the bug and give any logs that google needs to assist.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Jac Thomas||1/29/13 3:39 PM|
I have disabled every single plugin and still the same result. So it isn't X plugin. With so many people, and so many different possibilities of plugins, wouldn't there be a general consensus that this isn't plugin related and more along the lines of main app related?

Thanks for your reports. The issue that you are seeing today is likely caused by a different issue, than what was originally reported on this thread. Please let us know about the following, so that we can look into the current issue in more detail:
Some of you may have already tried the following, but if you have not, please let us know if it helps:
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||drewbell||1/29/13 11:48 PM|
I have tried:
and none of these help. chrome always starts out ok and loads the initial page but after a few minutes or a few clicks through some bookmarks, the browswer starts hanging. starting a new tab doesn't help, the problem is across all tabs. the only way to fix it is to close chrome and restart it.
Everything was fine on my system for the last 2 years until version 24.0.1312.56 m rolled out. I have been unable to use chrome since that day.
Note that I have a laptop with the new version that works fine. The laptop is 32 bit win7, the desktop with the problems is 64bit win7. Not sure if that's related or not, just stating the facts.

Hi, lately I have been having problems with Google chrome becoming unresponsive every day, several times a day, there seems to be problems particularly with PDFs.
I get a message saying "this page has become unresponsive, do you want to kill it or wait". The page sometimes responds again but then stops responding and I have to close it and start again. Google maps is bad for it. I don't browse in incognito. i have tried the trouble shooting guideis there anything you can suggest trying?
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||lexplex||1/30/13 9:37 AM|
It happens in incognito mode. It still happens if I create a new user. It happens on Google Maps, Gmail, Wunderlist, Trello, BBC News and seemingly other pages that have rich HTML5 content.
The page hangs when performing an action. Google Maps is hanging when I try to plot a route, when I hit return to search or hover the mouse over the search box. It also hanged when I was trying to change the route options once I had a route open. On Wunderlist it just hangs in the background and the page sticks. In all examples, the page just sticks - no error message - just freezes, and the mouse sticks on the pointing finger or text cursor when on that tab in the content window. Switching to a still-working tab fixes the cursor, but switching back returns the cursor to that state and either returns to a blank screen or the screen stays the same as whatever working tab I was just on.
Here's my version.
Google Chrome 24.0.1312.56 (Official Build 177594)
I'm having to stop using Chrome until this is fixed. It's happening on multiple computers now.

I get no errors, it simply stays frozen in it's "latest" state. I can't scroll, I can click and randomly will hit a link based on pure luck... if I use middle mouse click it'll open the link in a new tab. If I don't, the title bar changes but the page remains frozen as it was. Refresh doesn't refresh anything (well, it looks like it does on the top bar, but the tab doesn't do anything).

entire browser becomes unresponsive when problems start
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||rchthemaster||1/31/13 11:50 AM|
Hello Sie_Deen. Here is my Chrome version details:
1. Google Chrome 24.0.1312.52 (Official Build 175374) m
2. When this happens it usually just says something like "The following page(s) have become unresponsive. You can wait for them to become responsive or kill them." It then displays the option to stop the page session (kill pages) or wait for it to respond (wait).
3. I don't think there are any specific URL's that make it do so. It just does it randomly on any website, usually on Facebook for me that I can be sure of.
4. When it becomes unresponsive, only that tab becomes unresponsive. Some become unresponsive at the same time, others stay running. But usually when I refresh or make a new tab, it will happen again within the next 5 minutes or so.
5. Incognito mode does not help it.
6. I've tried logging into chrome as a new user and after browsing it came up with the "Pages have become unresponsive" error again, so this does not help, either.
If there is anything else I can assist with trying to provide information to resolve this problem, please ask. I want to get this fixed ASAP.

Can't try any of your sugestions because the Chrome tab is completely unresponsive. The cursor is stuck either as an arrow or the spinning circle, depending on startup [although the flashing cursor in the address bar is active but can't type anything into it]. Am typing this using IE (ugh).

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||craftercity||2/4/13 2:45 PM|
Now I am getting page unresponsive, asking me to kill the page or wait, at every day normal websites that I have gone to for years, the mouse locks and scroll bar freezes, printing a page freezes, to stop it you have to click the minimize window or go to another window tab and go back to it, didn't have a problem for years, now past 6 months its daily, all day, I use it for my business ready to leave chrome with frustration, already cleared out everything, it got worse! Just got the kill page message as I was typing this at Google Groups -3rd, 4th time now! The only thing that works on the page is the up or down arrows or backspace, freezes about every 10 minutes or less, came to chrome because IE was acting up, love the features but hate wasting my time! And there seems to be no solution after much Googling, mouse freezing in Google Chrome!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||craftercity||2/4/13 2:47 PM|
Also mouse won't allow you to click on a link, just the I line appears for the mouse not the arrow.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Crystal Anne||2/4/13 9:21 PM|
I am having so much trouble with Chrome, I have stopped using it. I emailed support several times with no support and felt ignored. To me this is very bad business policy. If there is a problem Chrome or google should resolve it or atleast respond to an email asking for support. I had the same issue with Firefox a number of years back and I went back to explorer. I wonder if Explorer is the best because of the numerous updates that are requried to be downloaded weekly? It seems that Explorer is more on top of their issues and problems so I prob won't bother with chrome, or firefox. Its unfortunate though since Chrome has potential.

I have the same problem. Mine is because Shockwave keeps crashing.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||bm9||2/7/13 4:13 PM|
Individual tabs become completely unresponsive (Other tabs + chrome are unaffected), but give no error. Refreshing the page does not change anything. Closing the tab and re-opening through ctrl+shift+T DOES work in restoring the page.
This has been happening to any kind of page I have seen, usually when left alone for some time, from 40 minutes on perhaps. Opening a new tab and visiting the unresponsive tabs' page works but only since it is in a new tab. Visiting the page in incognito also works but again only through being a new working tab to begin with.
I am not signed into chrome.

I tried Incognito and it seemed to be ok.
I then got out of incognito and it began to fail so I cleared all browser data, no help. I then disable all extensions and browsed around and opened many tabs and had no problems. Short story I narrowed it down to TABS EXPOSE 2.0.5.
This is what is causing all my problems....

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||drewbell||2/23/13 6:56 PM|
Been trying to figure out how to fix this for over a month now and finally came up with a solution on my system worth trying for those of you suffering.
I was in the chrome shortcut properties in the compatibility box trying to see if I could put it in 32 bit compatibility mode but realized i can't, so I tried xp/vista compatibility and that didn't help. Jut for shits and giggles, i tried clicking run the program as an administrator (bottom of the compatibility tab) and voila, chrome has been working robustly for me again.
No idea why this fixed it, but it does.

I need 10 seconds to display a page, compared to 1 second with Firefox 19.0.2 or Safari 6.0.2 for the very same page.

Switching back to Firefox and Safari for now...

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||craftercity||3/13/13 5:39 PM|
GO TO TOOLS>EXTENSIONS>ENABLE (UNCHECK NORTON ANTI-VIRUS)
So someone suggestion it was a problem with extensions, then as someone else mentioned after a re-boot, Google popped up a message that it cleaned extensions not used but I was still having the problems, so someone from the forum showed me Tools>Extensions> and the only item left in it that was Enabled was my Norton Anti-Virus, I unchecked it now disabled it and every single problem, everything prints now, mouse started scrolling, not stalling, no more unresponsive pages, it zips around, it all works if Norton is not enabled and it will have all glitch symptoms as everyone describes if you enabled it. The thing that I don't like, is not being able to jump to my favorite websites with it unable and not be able to use Norton auto fill in for passwords to quickly get in, but it is a quick settings adjustment, so when I am opening things up, I enable it. It was also auto filling in when I didn't want it to where I was working on my website so hope this helps everyone, its a Google Chrome issue that should be in their FAQ's as an answer, it took way to long to figure it out and I appreciate whoever figured it out and told me about it.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||jeansienkin||3/14/13 12:44 AM|
Well, I don't have any extension excepting "Docs 0.0.0.6" which came by default. Neither do I have Norton antivirus installed, if this can help.
Chrome is even struggling displaying its extensions, settings and history options. I already tried to uninstall and reinstall it, I thought it was a preference problem at the beginning, but I have the same problems with the other users sessions.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help.

Recently, I am also getting this problem.
When I open Google, it won't open.
I get a message, something like "Google.com can't open" or "The following page can't find DNS"
I didn't remember what it says, but it is close to that.
I refresh it 10 times and it still doesn't open.
I reopen Google Chrome, and Google finally opens.
Now, I go to Facebook and it won't response.
Then I get the message again.
And this repeats more frequently..
"Type "chrome:version" in the address bar and let us know the details from that page."

No, I think all URLs can become unresponsive.
Google, Facebook, Youtube, Gmail, etc.

I have been having a similar problem with version 27 as stated. My chrome version details are:
Google Chrome 27.0.1453.94 (Official Build 201630) m
I have also enabled verbose logging with Chrome (using CMD chrome --enable-logging --v=1&) and have found that there is a problem with the GPU processing:
[3808:8796:0603/194031:ERROR:accelerated_surface_win.cc(722)] Failed to open sha
These OpenGL errors are correlated with the errors that I have on page - i.e. when a page does not display even when loaded and I have to close the tab and reopen it with Ctrl Shift T.
As my laptop has dual graphics cards (integrated and NVIDIA), I have tried running Chrome with the integrated graphics card instead of the NVIDIA one. This has helped with my problem.
My NVIDIA graphics card make is 310M. Perhaps everyone who has this problem should check to see what their graphics card make is to see if there is a trend with this?

Sometimes, the Windows firewall settings blocks Google chrome.
Type "Firewall" in your windows start menu and select:
'Allow a program through Windows Firewall'
Check in the list if Google Chrome is on every type of network (Domain, Home/Work, Public, ...).

When you add a program to the list of allowed programs in a firewall, or when you open a firewall port, you allow a particular program to send information to or from your computer through the firewall. Allowing a program to communicate through a firewall (sometimes called unblocking) is like punching a hole in the firewall.
Each time you open a port or allow a program to communicate through a firewall, your computer becomes a bit less secure. The more allowed programs or open ports your firewall has, the more opportunities there are for hackers or malicious software to use one of those openings to spread a worm, access your files, or use your computer to spread malicious software to others.
It's generally safer to add a program to the list of allowed programs than to open a port. If you open a port, it stays open until you close it, whether or not a program is using it. If you add a program to the list of allowed programs, the "hole" is open only when needed for a particular communication.

I believe the problem here, as is mine, is that you can already use chrome to access the web (so no firewall issue), but that the pages and chrome itself becomes unresponsive after time. Even the google talk plugin itself becomes unresponsive.
Going to try and downgrade myself to 26 too.

This is ridiculous... I am as big a Google fan as there is; using Calendars, Gmail, Tasks, Voice, Drive, and Chrome every single day. This issue has plagued me for 4-5 months now, and nothing has worked. Very unimpressed Google. Chrome has become almost unusable...

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||David VanCuran||6/20/13 3:59 PM|
Same issues. Pages, Gmail and others become unresponsive. There is no error besides the Google box that pops up stating page (Then lists the url or gmail page) has become unresponsive. it them gives a choice of waiting for page to respond or kill page. If you try waiting for the page to respond it never does.I always need to shut down all chrome pages and gmail and start them back up again. This has become very annoying as it has been happening a few times a day and slows down my job search and school work.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Ryan Sharif||6/20/13 9:53 PM|
Google has had problems with its browser from day one, but you guys don't want to admit it. People switched to Google Chrome because it was said the chrome is faster, not richer in features compared to Firefox. It is not just one person who is complaining. I have the same problem and I am switching to Firefox.
Tell you folks to take care of these issues rather than looking more and more into how much every day Google stock goes higher. There have been companies much stronger than Google and exactly because of this kind of ignorance, they took a big dive. Don't let Google become one of them.

Just do it and it will work fine:
1. Right click google chrome.
2. Click properties.
3. Click shortcut tab.
4. add this in target destination --disable-hang-monitor
5. It should look like this
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-hang-monitor
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Sanjay Antony-Babu||6/24/13 3:01 AM|
I have been having this same issue for a few days but sorted it by doing the following:
Close and fully quit Chrome
Migrate to folder : /Users/*Username*/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
*Username* depends on the user name that you have on your profile.
Rename the folder named "Default" to "Backup default"
Hope it works for others too.

1. Can you try running Chrome using --no-sandbox as a parameter? Is it reproducing the same issue?
If google chrome is running on your system, close it.
Find the shortcut to Chrome, Right click and add a simple command at the end of target option- “--no-sandbox ” or ” --no-process-plugins ” [Do not forget double dash -- before the switch.]
Click ok! And you will not receive the error anymore.

Same thing happens to me. Uninstalled all extensions, still hangs. Specifically, when I frist open Chrome, there is one or two 20 second hangs after I make my first move, i.e. click in the address bar, create a new tab, etc.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||@curmudgeon61||7/9/13 10:42 AM|
This has been a growing (and annoying) problem for me. Sometimes I cannot even go to google.com successfully.
The only thing that helps is to "temporarily" turn off the new gmail compose mode. But that only makes some sites better. A few, like facebook, are bad.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||CPJackson||7/13/13 12:00 PM|
Yup -- it's like it's not persistent enough when it requests data. I reload and it's fine -- but annoying nevertheless.
Google Chrome: 28.0.1500.72 (Official Build 211400) (latest version)
But really, what this issue is is a browser timeout -- the same message you see when the network is not available.
Understanding that TCP/IP transmissions aren't always successful, I suspect the browser is giving up too soon on establishing or completing the transfer of data. That's just my superficial observation. I see it most commonly with google.com, but that may be just because it's my homepage.

Joining the fray after the third Chrome update since this began happening for me failed to fix anything.
Running Chrome Version 28.0.1500.72m on Win7-64 with 8GB RAM. No specific messages but it is usually possible to get Chrome to pop-up a message that Chrome has become unresponsive .. relaunch now? No specific URLs involved and all tabs/windows exhibit this behavior.
Have tried other steps mentioned to no avail, including disabling extensions and clearing browsing data.
Specific to my situation, this is 100% reproducible when I switch from work to home or vice versa. In that transition, the computer "sleeps" and is woken up in the other location. Work includes two 23" external monitors and my work WiFi network. Home is the laptop standalone and my home network, of course.
I do have a sense that if I "sleep" at home and "wake" other than at work, that Chrome behaves properly, but have not been able to confirm this absolutely.
Looking forward to resolution.

Hi, I am working on a project where I use jquery. I thought I should update the script since it was quite old (1.8.x). After that I experienced problems with chrome especially when using chrome inspector. After updating jQuery I never got to see the inspector window again. I uninstalled few of the plugins I had but no succes.
I noticed in the newer versions of jQuery there is a commented line like:
After I removed that line, I could see the inspector again. I tested it in Opera as well (the same problem, and removing that line solved the problem). I am not sure what is the problem but it worked. I thought maybe it helps somebody.
Cheers, Florin Cosmin Onciu.

My ISP asked me to disable IPv6 on my local area connection weeks ago, until they could fix the problem. This worked perfectly for weeks. Now my ISP has fixed the problem on their end, and I have IPv6 enabled again and everything is working flawlessly.
My particular ISP is HughesNet Gen4 system. Not sure if others with my problem were also using this ISP, or similar services, but if so, then the problem may be fixed now on your PC, or you may temporarily fix the problem by disabling IPv6 as I did.
In W7 just click on start, search IPv6, select "View network connections", right click, "Local Area Connection" and select "properties". In dialog box uncheck IPv6 option then click OK.
It worked well for me, and hopefully it'll work for others who may be having this problem.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Ben Losaw||7/30/13 6:57 PM|
This has been happening to me too.
Windows XP Compaq, I switched to Chrome from Firefox because I thought it was faster, really now its becoming a frustration.
I've noticed a process.
I open tabs, start browsing on flash heavy pages, such as youtube & vaughntv. I use them for about 5 minutes & they work for 5 minutes. Then pages become unresponsive & computer takes up 100% of my cpu & starts heating up.
Flash crashes & becomes unresponsive & then google chrome locks up, once I clear history & cache, shut down chrome & restart it, the browser works for another 5 minutes. I should not be having to plow through all this stuff when I spend 3-4 hours a day on my computer.
Going to go back to using firefox until this issue is fixed. Like Chrome & the ease of chrome, but its been a serious headache for a few days now.

I am having this problem, too. Chrome pages become unresponsive.
It is also very hit and miss. Sometimes I can open a new tab, type and address, see the tab hang, close the tab, open a new tab, type the same address, and it goes to the page immediately.
I can open Internet Explorer and go to the same pages without any problem/delays, even while the unresponsive Chrome is running.
There are no error messages.
Sometimes all the Chrome tabs become extremely slow and sometimes it is only specific tabs.
It happens with all kinds of urls.
I tried running Incognito and it didn't help. Neither did switching to a new user.
I disabled most of my extensions. I only have Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Silverlight, and Java.
This is what my version page says:

However, the last few times I have seen the error message have been the following websites
When the webpage does become unresponsive, is it limited to only that tab? Yes. The page will become unresponsive and I'll see the infamous message.
I usually see the error message once a day for the last week.
I have also seen the error message in the incognito window.

I had issues with Gmail-inbox constantly and relentlessly reloading on Chrome 'Version 29.0.1547.57 m'. This would continue until i manually 'stop loading this page - X'. After which, if i did not time the loading right, most elements in the page would become unresponsive.
For me the first option laid out by Sie worked and on further investigation i figured out that the extension: SmoothScroll with extension ID: 'cccpiddacjljmfbbgeimpelpndgpoknn' was causing this issue. Removing this extension from chrome seems to have solved the constant reload issue. Hope this helps, and thanks to Sie Deen.

|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||wickwoodonline||8/31/13 6:15 AM|
Google Chrome on my Mac started becoming unresponsive for me several times a day now since the automatica update that changed the New Tab page (which incidently I'm also not happy with).
The unresponsiveness is not for any particular URL and there are no error messages. It seems to occur mostly when opening a new tab or window. However I have also experienced it after leaving the browser and the computer idle for enough time that my screen goes to sleep (15mins). BTW, I'm on 27inch iMac with OSX 10.8.4.
When it happens Chrome is entirely unresponsive. Nothing will load in the new tab or window and nothing can be done in any other window, including being able to close tabs and windows. Mac Force Quit does not show it as being unresponsive but the only way to get out of it is to Force Quit the program.
I have not tried doing anything Incognito because by the time it happens, I can't do anything. However I guess I could try doing all my browsing Incognito for awhile and see if it happens then.
Below is the output from "chrome:version" command.
Is there a way to go back to an older version of Chrome until this is fixed? I have had to change my default browser back to Safari, and I'm not happy to do so, but it is the only way I can get any work done.
Thanks for any help in advance,

I also had the AddThis extension enabled, however disabling it did not change anything for me. I have also disabled all extensions and all plugins and my Chrome browser continues to become unresponsive.
I have noticed that this occurs frequently when the browser is left idle for a period of time. My next test is to start measuring the time from start to unrepsonsiveness.

Having the same issue, very sluggish, hogging too much memory, etc. Well, after the most recent update, CHROME WILL NOT OPEN!
It sits there trying to open the previously opened windows, and a few will open, but most just sit there. I can't even manually close some, clicking on the X does nothing. It will sit spinning its wheels for 20 mins or so, sometimes crashing eventually, sometimes not. I tried re-installing the previous version, and it made no difference. It's totally screwed up, and obviously no one at Google cares at all, as this has been going on over a year, and now has rendered this "browser" completely inoperable.....

I'm having the same issue, Chrome Beta on Windows. But I don't recall ever seeing this issue on my Arch Linux machines. The CPU hits 25%, the fan it's 100%, and the desk under my laptop has burn marks!
It always seems to be the Gmail tab.

For the past 3 days Chrome is running very slow and becomes unresponsive. When I try to view an open or new tab the nothing and then a pop up that says "the following pages have become unresponsive. you can wait for them to become responsive or KILL them"
Here's everything I've tried to remedy the problem:
- 4 different virus scans (all clean)
Here's what shows up when I went to chrome://version as you've suggested:

I also have become very frustrated with Chrome. Almost always now it can't even load the Google home page without generating the Page(s) Unresponsive message. This is for a Windows XP using Service Pack 3. It worked just fine 6 months ago.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||DGDanforth||9/12/13 1:30 AM|
And here is my chrome//version output
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||DGDanforth||9/12/13 1:44 AM|
It happens on all pages and all tabs.
Google's home page fails to load almost always. At least 30 seconds to several minutes are now necessary to wait until it loads. Not only does it screech to a halt but the cpu usage slows my whole computer down. Attempting to minimize the Chrome browser takes for ever and when it does minimize the screen refresh is very slow, wipe from top to bottom taking at least 1 minute.
This is completely unacceptable.
I speculate that chrome has added too much junk, too many features to the browser. For example the 'new' Google Maps is completely useless. I had to revert back to the old form. Google needs to shoot for the 'lowest common denominator) of machine that is using their system and not the 'highest common denominator'. My machine is running at 2GHz and has 604 MB of RAM (partitioned from 2GB). That has always been more than sufficient. Now it does not seem to be.

"You done good," Linda! :)
At some point, Google developers cannot continue to ignore this thread.
For me, as long as I do not put my laptop to sleep between alternating connections between standalone and multiple displays, I am good to go ... except for occasional black screens - see separate thread.
One continues to trust that Google will come to the party and acknowledge the wide-spread issue here.

I was having the same problem. It started immediately after installing the Circles extension in Chrome. I removed the extension and restarted Chrome and now everything seems to be working properly.

Chrome has become so bad for me that it can't even load the Google home page. It gives shows "Unresponsive" window almost always. It even crashed Chrome the last time it tried it.
I have now switched back to Firefox which works nicely. Firefox works even better after I deleted my Google+ account. It is now spunky and fast. I still use Google for searching and it is my home page which loads under Firefox with no problem.
It amazes me that Google seems to be unaware of these (our) difficulties with Chrome.
Say Google! What did you do to Chrome in the last 6 months that made it so poor?

You're not alone. Web developer, and Chrome is a key tool for me. Don't make me go back to Firefox! I know software has bugs, even the BEST browser ever, but allowing them to hang around for a long time. Not good! Please google devs, tell me how I can help! I have a CSC degree if that helps you to decide to help me help you decipher the problem etc. Both of my computers exhibit this behavior intermittently.
I removed all extensions and rebooted. Same issue. Been going on for at least a week, maybe two.

Same issue here as reported by others recently. Pages begin to load and then freeze. CPU usage goes up and every tab is dead. No scrolling or clicking is possible, just tab switching. I started a completely new user profile and still experience the issue. So I guess this has nothing to do with user settings, extensions, etc.

I saw a posting that google would not support facebook games, is this the reason it keeps going unresponsive? I am tired of having to go all the way out and come back in from the beginning. It is real REAL old.

Hello this unresponsive thing was happening to me until now when i took your suggestion. It was driving me crazy because i just got my browser goin well after
the summer upgrade dibacle. I took your advice and went to incognito but right away it wanted me to create a new user account. after that i went think i went into my old e mail account and bookmarks and things are running well. I am not sure if i m in incognito or not now.

this is cause by a virus making damage to netframework (for my analysis) i also encounter same problem the only solution i suggest is to use mozilla firefox, if you want try to reformat you operating sysmtem...

Explorer and Internet Explorer are two different things :)
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||WhatTheFEverYo||11/14/13 8:35 PM|
Yeah, google should just fix their free browser instead of me having to do something for myself. Yay humans!

I agree, Chrome is more trouble than it's worth now. Chrome used to be the best browser out there, now when I use Chrome I keep getting hung tabs. I switched back to FireFox as my default browser a week ago, and it's been much better. Another advantage of Firefox is that when I click on a link to a .pdf file, Chrome often wanted me to download it, whereas Firefox just displays it.
I'm using Win7 x64.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||robertvphillips||11/16/13 9:00 AM|
My browser window becomes unresponsive, but I have separate browser windows open, and NOT overlapping or touching on the visual display.
When one window 'freezes' hovering over its tabs do not cause any highlighting of the tabs, and no responses to my actions are shown in that window.
I pick a tab that is NOT raised at the moment onthe frozen window.
Then I go to the other NON-overlapping google-chrome window and hit one of ITS tabs, and it does raise;
AND the uresponsive window that I just came from 'wakes up' and the last clicked tab that I selected there also raises.
I go back to that formerly-unresponsive window, and I can click and change tabs like normal. It is unfrozen.
But it works for only about 10 or 12 tab changes until it freezes again. However annoying this workaround is, at least it works.

I'm having the same problems!!!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||Swaroop Pillarisetti||12/4/13 6:19 AM|
The error is so frequent and highly frustrating. I can not work anymore with these errors. WHy are you asking users to send so much data when a million people seem to be getting these errors. if it is one off or a few, then you can try to get more data to resolve. It looks from all these users that there is a huge issue. Please resolve it. And also try to be more elaborate in your steps above for not so tech savvy people.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||JudyFL||12/4/13 11:04 AM|
I agree completely with Swaroop. This problem has been going on too long, for too many people. This should be on TV news shows and get as much exposure as the problems with the US Obamacare website!
I'm a journalist and I'm going to have to switch to a different browser because the "pages unresponsive" popups have been happening too often and it's affecting my work. Today is the worst ever. For the last 20 minutes, I can't access several pages at all.
I really thought Google (a huge company, after all, with tons of resources) was smarter than to let this problem drag on for a year or more now. Shame on you, Google!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||schultzter72||12/4/13 12:28 PM|
I was having the same issue. The solution for me was to remove the Rapportive Chrome extension. Once I did that I had no more problems. So my guess in everyone's case is that there's an extension or plugin or app that's hanging.
I know that the MightyText extension I have installed causes occasional problems when it time-outs connecting but I just have to click Ok in the modal message box it pops-up.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||chrisZsnow||12/7/13 4:37 PM|
WTF I got a BRAND NEW laptop TODAY- and I'm getting the same goddamn "page unresponsive, kill page' message. Are you fucking kidding Google? You're such a freakin worthless PIECE OF SHIT!!!
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||jrzgrrl1||12/10/13 8:50 AM|
I've been getting the same issues for a year now...I'm beginning to wonder if this is why my FB has been acting strangely too. I can't share anything, it shows my background pic and nothing else, no words or anything and constantly locks up all other pages I have open. I used to love Google Chrome...now I loathe it. I stopped using IE because it would freeze and now my "go to" browser sucks too.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||schultzter72||12/10/13 9:58 AM|
Have you tried disabling all your extensions, etc.? That was the problem for me, an extension (Rapportive) that misbehaved.
|Re: Google Chrome -- pages keep becoming unresponsive.||CL_NDelta||12/10/13 10:51 AM|
Well... (writing this using FireFox) I've disabled all the extensions and it's been no help at all. Still slow. Will not load pages such as Google Calender unless I open a new separate tab. The act of creating a new tab and moving over to it seem to trigger the original tab to show the content that was taking so long to load.
This is on my Vista 32bit business laptop where I am relying on Google calender to manage my time. I don't have a problem with Chrome on my 64bit Vista desktop or my 64bit Win7 family desktop or my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone or Nexus tablet.
I've tried to pinpoint what might be different on my business laptop in terms of software that was installed around the time this issue started. I can only think it may have been anti-malware software I trialed and removed that has left a residual. Maybe other people have also used this software?
I was using AVIRA (paid) which has been removed as it was causing huge delays in loading pages due how they check a database online when scanning. I trialed Bitdefender and it had serious issues - failure to load, hangs, freezes, delays. I tried F-Prot which was very good but ultimately removed as it lacked some manual configuration features I desired (may use the Bitdefender engine in part). I settled on Emsisoft's Anti-Malware as I had already been using their Online Armor from prior to Emsisoft acquiring Tall Emu (the originators of Online Armor). Emsisoft uses two engines in their AM product - one is their own and the other is Bitdfender.
All my PC's are now running Emsisoft Anti-Malware but the laptop is the only one running Emsisoft's Online Armor firewall. In addition to scouring the config of Online Armor to see if a rule is acting on a Chrome component, I have also tried shutting down Online Armor and it makes no difference.
I have done Safe mode scans with several different anti-malware products on the laptop and nothing has been found.
I'm going to be retiring this laptop shortly. It's replacement will also have the same anti-malware software installed. It will be interesting to see if the issue continues.
