Let's try this. Off the top of my head.
It's not the width of the page that's the problem, it's the amount of crap you're trying to shove into it. Put the recommended videos back on a separate tab. Put the All Activity back on a separate tab.
If you offer me a piece of cake, I may accept it, even if I've never tried that kind before. If you shove it in my mouth in order to get me to taste it to teach me that I'll really like it, you'll probably walk away with a black eye. This is pretty much what you're trying to do with the recommended videos and the new layout. My guess is that you've got a lot of paid content coming and you need a way to force us to see it in order to entice us to buy it. Please see cake analogy above.
Mouse-over background color change on comments is fine, but it shouldn't get brighter. It makes it more difficult on the eyes for reading because as any good photographer will tell you, our brain naturally picks out the areas which are lighter in color than their surrounding (we also pick out movement/change). The background should be white, the mouse-over background should be LIGHT gray, and the text black. Note the mouse-over color change on the buttons in the left column. See how the BG gets darker? It works better. Now, the light-gray text on those buttons should be lighter - you know, white, and it'll be much easier to read (but, it should be on it's own tab, not here).
Like the passing trend of stacked food, stacking the videos in a single column, simply makes it more difficult to get to what we want, when we want it. When it's all laid out on the plate in front of us, we can choose not only a green bean, but we can choose which green bean. Am I in the mood for a big one, or a little one? I don't have to go digging through the pile, because they're all right there in front of me and I, the consumer can see them.
In an effort to make the comments more readable (I'll assume), you've greatly increased the space between them. It doesn't work. It's ugly, clumsy and just too big. Put them back closer together. If need be, put a very thin, very light gray line in between each, and it's fine.
How about fixing the comments so that there are ten levels of nesting instead of simply having two. Two is better than one, but it's not good enough to follow a thread. Yes, ten levels really can be done. One of the very few things that google has done to improve youtube since buying it was the yellow highlight of a users own comments. Now you've removed it. It should come back. It could be slightly paler and still be fine.
On my channel page, I'd like to be able to see more than just a couple of my latest comments. More please.
I also really don't want to see listed there the videos I've liked. I don't like videos for me, I like them to encourage the maker/poster. (This is also why your recommendations aren't really ever very good for me.) This area used to allow me choose not to show the liked videos. You've now taken that ability away. It should come back.
Also in this area, you allow me to click on an X to remove an item. This has never worked properly, and it still doesn't. Every item I get rid of, comes back.
The contrast between the thumbs up and down on videos and comments isn't enough. First, they're not even consistent, (which is one of the big problems with your overall design changes, lack of consistency), but they're just too subtle. There was nothing wrong with the colors previously used.
