I took the export from Subtitle workshop - opened it in "notepad" - replaced the individual captions that didn't encode properly and save the .srt as "unicode".  

The Japanese subtitles only had two bad captions - the chinese however has a heap... it will be a huge task to replace them all.  There must be a better way of doing this...
