Youtube backgrounds using the new design are blocked by ad blockers.....if you're using an ad blocker chances are you won't see backgrounds on youtube channels. I guess they're trying to load backgrounds the same way ad's do now.
Not only that but you don't see much of the backgrounds on the new layout either way thanks to the stupid gray background that covers 80% of the page.

YT KARL is going to keep saying you can change back to the old layout by selecting edit channel because that's what he's programmed to say. Yes Karl, but how do we get the old homepage back?

This new setup is useless and not efficient at all. It actually hinders the usability of youtube in every way.
