I am very unhappy that this feature has been discontinued. It provided (to me at least) tremendously interesting and useful insights about the emergence of new terminology and concepts online. Search queries provide very little information on usage (because, e.g., figures of speech are seldom searched for, but provide great information on how people change the way they think and talk about ideas). Google grams only looks at books, and its most recent data is from 2008 -- the Google Timeline feature was all there was.
At the very least I wish there had been some notice that the feature would be removed: I was tracking dozens of interesting new trends using it. Would you be able to at least tell us why?
