You cannot do this yourself, it has to be enabled by your hoster.

Don't worry about the gzip compresssion. Sometimes this can cause more problems than it's worth.

 

Make your pages lighter instead, if it is such a great problem. Shorter  pages, optimized images. Combine css files, javascript files.
