Crawling, indexing & ranking
I don't really buy into the idea of reduced PageRank flow due to the number of links on pages, although I generally do recommend use a a nofollow attribute on links (such as email a friend) that you don't want search engines to crawl (in conjunction with robots.txt) for the sake of crawl efficiency.
I don't think you have to pick either users or search engines in this case, as that never makes sense (by focusing on search engines, you are trying to be visible to searchers, who then end up on your site, so if you haven't built the site for them, you've wasted all that effort making sure search engines could rank your pages well). But this is a situation where figuring out the best technical infrastructure can considerably help crawlability, and ultimately ranking.
