I think google does do a good job finding out the good, big domains.  But not every pages of the big domains are of high quality.  The most problematic are those out of dates contents on big domains, or a small paragraph buried in a long article which is so hard to find out.  Most of the time, when I search on google, I need an quick answer.  If doing research, It is necessary to go into paid databases.
