It's unfortunate that the Google Image index isn't as well tuned into malware detection as the general index.
 Unsuspecting searchers clicking an image will get exposed instantly to a malicious landing page.

yes, and even savvy users are exposed.

there is no way to know if a site is infected or will redirect you to some rogue / malware until you have already clicked on the image.

if i didn't have a good antivirus and a secured system, i would have been infected already just by clicking on google image search results.
