Thank you Autcrat and Wadjei so much for your replys and apologies for not responding sooner ... hectic morning!
Also, I have just had a reply from my hosting people with the same answer.
I have discovered .htaccess files in almost every folder in site ... have deleted them all, changed my passwords and deleted the phpMyAdmin folder (which was not active anyway.)
We are back online.

Much appreciate the extra info wadjei and yes the site compromise was round about the time you stated! Clever stuff!
