@ zpntenergy,

...hope no one minds a question from a beginner....  Not at all.  Everyone starts as a beginner.

...Can I use a regular phone with google voice...  Yes.
  • Google Voice (GV) is a call management system.
  • It is designed to enhance your phone's capabilities, not to replace your carrier.
  • GV uses phones to send/receive calls. If those phones can not make and receive calls, then GV will not work with that phone.
  • Learn more about [1] GV basics.
...must I use a microphone plugged into my computer...  GV does not use a computer to make calls.
If you want that, then check out [2] Gmail's Call phone (Chat).

...This is how Vonage worked...  As before, GV is not designed to replace your carrier.

...I do not have a router at the present time  Do I need one....  You do not need one with GV.
You do need a computer with internet access to set up a GV account.

...what do I physically plug my phone into...  You plug your phone into what your provider requires.
My guess is that this would be the wall.

...And where do I get it...  Again, this information would come from your provider.
