@Aerilius - drawing another line just to measure a line seems like a road to madness and tedium, I've drawn the line once why should I have to draw it again just to get a measurement? 

What I was kinda hoping for  was just an addition to the tool that is basically already there ie measurement of length, lets say by pressing ALT to sum the totals etc. I agree it would be good as an add-on, but think Google could add this functionality with out much fuss. I'm sure other people would benefit from such an addition, especially if they do as much proto-typing as I do.
