Same problem...just going to import locks it up...even with no outside device plugged in. Must be something in Picasa if everyone is having the same problem.   Please find a fix soon!  BTW...I love that you have added all the great, new effects, especially since Piknik (which I love) is leaving...boo hoo.  Thanks!
