: Maps, Earth, Latitude
I've been using Google Maps on my Andoid phone in Europe for nearly 2 months now. I use the navigation for the car and think it works pretty well. However trying to use the navigation feature while riding my bike has consistently been hopeless. It took me a long time to realize I could turn off the satellite view for walking navigation. When I did that I thought I would be able to select my route for walking (there are no bike route options here but I can generally ride the bike most places I walk)but I soon found out there's something radically different about the walking navigation vs the driving. Today I took a 2 hour ride in a new place to test out the navigation without the satellite view. I thought it would be just like the one for cars but it was so different. I never could get it to show exactly the way I was going. It was always sideways or something else but not showing me exactly whats up ahead. I kept pressing the little red arrowhead in the left corner but it would never orient itself to my actual path. Much of the time the blue (my location) arrowhead was pointing in exactly the opposite to the direction I was moving. Often I simply couldn't tell which way it wanted me to go. I also don't understand why there's a blue arrowhead on top of a blue route. I would suggest a different color than the route and a small trail of the last few yards so you can see clearly which direction your headed. Other times I would be going along and then there would appear a bent arrow signalling a turn exactly where I had just been. I finally did what I've been doing the last months which was turn off the navigation and just select walking directions and then move the route along with my finger. I agree it's not that safe to do it but for now it's the only one I can make heads or tails out of..
