Update to the above... penknife trick worked for me too. Just eased the little metal bit gently but firmly upwards with a plastic tool while the phone was running and re connected it. Bam! USB is back! Nexus s USB connector is  clearly a bit prone to bad connections. Post further up - mcorton - thanks a million!
