HTC One V running Google Maps V 6.8.1

Compass Mode seems to not function, pressing the My Location button does absolutely nothing  

but my old HTC Desire with Maps v 6.8.1 .... ie the same ... Compass Mode works fine .. only difference I can see are the phone /android versions ??

Any one any ideas ??
