https://www.google.com/settings/security do you see 2-step verification listed as On? Or if you visit
https://accounts.google.com/b/0/IssuedAuthSubTokens and scroll to the bottom of the page, do you see your phone listed for an application-specific password?
If so, those are signs that you activated 2-step verification for you account to increase your phone's security. If that's the case, when you're signing in to your phone your phone is asking for an application-specific password and not your general account password.
