Hi there. I had exactly the same problem. And it's not just the text delays, some calls were going straight to voicemail. After much to-ing and fro-ing with Orange, I contacted HTC, who said they were aware of the problem, and that they were working on a fix. However, they were unable to tell me how long this would take, so offered to roll back the software to FroYo for me.
I asked Carphone Warehouse to downgrade it instead, as they supplied the phone. However, they sent it back with Gingerbread and the same problem. It took at lot of doing, and a lot of rubbish customer service from Orange, HTC and Carphone Warehouse, but in the end, CW offered me a different (and better) phone.
If you can convince HTC to roll it back for you, that might be your best bet. Not ideal though, when Android versions before 2.4 have been reported as not very secure.
As an aside, I did the GSM only thing for a while, and at least two of the texts I sent disappeared completely. Plus my ping and download speeds reduced considerably. Not really a good enough fix for a smart phone.
