I found this group as I'm having the same problem but I'm on a Galaxy S2 in the UK, Orange network.

Same issue as above, screen starts jerking around and sticking then eventually goes black as you turn layers on and off.

Only observation is that Maps is fine, it's Navigation that breaks. Almost like it gets confused trying to render where you are after going around a sharp corner as the screen has had to redraw the map too quickly.

6.9.0 seems to be the problem. I have Downgraded to 6.6.0 until its fixed.
