Email Push not working (2-step authentication enabled, using application-specific password)

Push-based syncing of my emails is broken once I enabled 2-step authentication and set and used application-specific password in my exchange account configuration. Manual fetch syncing works fine (I'm able to open the Mail app and fetch new emails). It's been months since I enabled 2-step authentication, so I'd like to know if we're dealing with a feature or a bug of Google Sync, or if my configuration is the problem.
