I have the same issue with the archive swipe.  In fact, it was so bad, another user had to tell me it was even a feature!  I thought it was just not built into the app.  But anyway, I've been using the iOS Mail app for my gmail acct for years, and had no trouble swiping at all in that.

After reading the OP, I tried swiping from the right to no avail.  The only thing that works for me is switching to "Unread", holding one finger in the empty space, and then the swipe works.  If i don't do it exactly like this, i get the folders view (which i love having the ability to swipe to).  Perhaps you could tweak it to where the swipe for folders view only works at the top of the screen.

I also would like the ability to control notification sound but that's not major for me.

And for the record, I love the rest of this app so much I've stopped using the iOS Mail app.  It's been relegated to some random app folder i never use.  My Gmail app lives on the home screen! Great work (once you fix the archive swipe!)

I'm using a white iPhone 4S, with iOS 5.1.1, GMAIL app version 1.2.7812

thanks!
