Yes Herwrden, Googlemaps has changed since that solution was posted.
I have just done a quick test on a workaround... and it seems to work.
1. select the link icon it top right of page
2 copy the link location (top one, not short url and not the embed link)
3 paste location into address bar
4 add "&output=kml" to the end

it should ask if you want to save or open that file. (firefox) ... continue as per previous solution.

Thanks for posting the question, I have been meaning to look how work around the changes. Just needed a nudge. Let me know if it works for you. As i say, I did a "quick" test. I'm too time poor to check it through completely.
