In a previous update of Google Navigation (Pre 6x?) if you were using the Navigation app and tapped the screen, then +/- Zoom buttons would appear in the corner for a few seconds. This has since been removed and is a drastic loss of usability for me. I use Navigation in the car all the time, and would very frequently use this feature to zoom out slightly so I can see more of the traffic conditions around me. This was even more useful when using Navigation to actually route to an address, as the default view does not show traffic information.
The pinch method that remains IS NOT a sufficient alternative because it is extremely difficult to zoom out without "unhinging" the view from following your current position. This is hard enough when stationary and holding the phone in your hand. But if you try to do this while driving with the phone on a mount and the vibration of the road it is next to impossible.
And the Traffic button in the bottom left corner is not a viable alternative either because that zooms WAY out to see large scale traffic conditions. I want to see the localized traffic within a few miles of my surroundings.
PLEASE RESTORE THIS PREVIOUS FUNCTIONALITY GOOGLE!
It is unobtrusive so restoring it does not detract in any way from the experience of those that don't want it. Or you could even do what the standard Maps app does and make this an option in the settings.
