Using Mac OS X v 10.7.3 (Lion), Google Chrome v19.0.1084.53 gave me the "A connection error occurred while loading this page. Please try refreshing the page." error message when I tried to create a hangout. However, I was able to create a hangout using Safari 5.1.5 (7534.55.3).
