Help! Cannot join a Google hangout, keep getting same error message

Hello,

I've been trying, for several days now, to join a Google Hangout I've been invited to, or to even to start one, and every time I get this error message:

A connection error occurred while loading this page. Please try refreshing the page

After I refresh the page, same message. Nothing ever loads -- no video, no nothin'. Just the google+ hangout logo. 

I've updated software, cleared caches, and tried on Chrome and Safari. I'm on a MacBook Pro running Mac Os 10.7.4.

Help!
