this effect is called the "endless tunnel". You shared the hangout window and had yourself "greenboxed" which will result in the phenomenon you described.

The next time make sure to either share your desktop and minimize the hangout window or share a separate tab/window.

Also make sure if you want to share the hangout to un-greenbox yourself.
