Contact Pictures keep disappearing

I have set pictures for some of my contacts, but every once in a while they disappear and I have to reset them.  I am using gmail via my PC, the Contacts app on my DroidX, and the Peoples app on my Android 4 tablet.  IS there a synch problem that drops these pictures?
