G1 Dev Phone won't connect to google servers with valid SIM card

I received my G1 developer phone about a week ago and can't get it to work. I inserted a SIM card which I used in another phone to access all kinds of internet services a lot, so the card DEFINITELY has a valid internet data access plan. Still, when I put it into the G1 and want to start the setup, it hangs when it tries to connect to the google servers to log in to my google account. Then after a while it tells me that it can't connect, that it might be a temporary problem or an issue with my SIM card (which it certainly isn't), bla bla...

So, so far I spent 400$ on a worthless paper weight and still can't develop Android software. Great start! Of course it's useless to ask any support, because in the Android game, everyone likes to place the blame somwere else.

- Ask Sunrise support, and they'll say (rightfully so) that since the SIM card works in other phones, the problem must be with google
- Ask google, and you usually just don't get an answer at all, or that something must be wrong with the SIM card...

Currently I suppose I'll just have to give up on Android development at this point since I don't see any way out of this situation. But if anyone has a suggestion, I'd be happy to hear it.
