This is a result of the 2 destructive Earthquakes that have struck the Canterbury region. Darfield Earthquake and Christchurch Earthquake

Note... Due to Imagery shifts the exact location may 'drift' a little. So if the Placemark is not on the exact Building it is in within a few meters of it. Using the Historical Imagery (From September 2010 onwards) you can see a lot of the damaged areas

The Central city is still cordoned off from about 2 to 3 blocks out. It is difficult to get photos with-in that area as they are now. When I find some or can take them myself I shall link to them. But in many cases the area will just be a pile of rubble or cleared land.
