Strange.

Not strange, but a result of trying to make fixed width satellite photos fit on a spherical surface. It's the other side of the problem where you take a spherical surface  and try to make it flat. Geographers have been wresting with this problem for years and you will notice that no flat map can turn the spherical surface of the earth into an undistorted representation. See this page.

An additional problem is that most weather satellites orbit over the equator which makes polar imagery very poorly represented.
