Tony Hillerman, author of a series of novels about the Navajo Tribal Police, has died in Phoenix, AZ at 83.
His popular books feature Indian Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. The novels take place mostly in the vast, desolate, and beautiful "Four Corners" region of the Southwestern United States. The books are not only mysteries but a look into the culture of the people who live there. Here's a video featuring Hillerman himself describing his life, his writing, and showing some of the scenery of this beautiful area.
The attached folder shows the four sacred mountains of the Navajo, which bound the area in which most of the novels are centered. Zoom in to each mountain view by clicking on the individual placemarks. Then take some time to float above and discover the desert terrain. For a "desolate" area, there is much to see.
