Java, I finally found and scanned the photo of my dad's highschool band. He's the 3rd from left, with his trusty washboard. Spoons were probably somewhere on his person. His older brother is 2nd from left. Dad is 14 in this, the others are 14-17. They played "cowboy and hillbilly" music and the occasional standard of the time, he said, but those were usually beyond their skills. grin "We probably sounded terrible, but nobody knew the difference." He also played his violin, not shown here.

It's 1933 in Keno, Oregon, and all, except perhaps the clarinet-player, are poorer than dirt-poor. Of course, this did not preclude having fun on Saturday nights at the school dance...quite the boys about town! ocool



In my post above, I included a photo of a washtub bass. It's not pictured here, but I do recall him saying they had one, perhaps brought out for certain numbers.
