To use a screenshot from Google Earth, first you need to save it:
  • You can do this via the menu in GE: File - Save - Save image, or ctrl-alt-S, or
  • Use a screen capture programme like MWSnap or ScreenHunter. If you have Windows 7 you can use the snipping tool , or
  • Press printscreen (or alt-printscreen) to copy the image, paste it into a picture editing program (whatever you have, even Windows Paint will do), crop the image to leave just the bit you want.

To post your photo or screenshot: use the "New topic" or "Post reply" button to create a post, then click the "Insert image" button:

The options are:
  • Upload photos - choose an image on your computer and you can upload it to Picasa web albums (more about Picasa web albums).  Currently you do not get a choice of album, photos are added to an album named "Dropbox".
  • Your photos - choose an image from one of your Picasa web albums.
  • Google Image Search - search for an image with Google search.  Not recommended - find the image you want first, and check that you have permission to use it.
  • URL - add an image located on another site, your Photobucket or Tinypic account for examples.  Please do not hotlink images on other sites unless the site specifically states that this is allowed. If using a photo hosting site select the direct link, for example:

The image will be centered.  If you wish to change this, place the cursor before the image and select the align left (or right) button above the posting box.

Click the image and you will see you have an option to change the image size, small, medium, large or original size.  Don't make your images too large.  The old BBS automatically resized large images to 800px wide, this one doesn't, so if you have a large screen, remember, the image that fits nicely for you may cause problems for others.  Ideally, make sure your image is a reasonable size first, then choose "Original size".

You may find that you need to move the image to a different position in the text.  Select it, cut it, and paste it in the desired location.  Or if you find it easier, cut and paste your text.

If you want to delete or replace the image, select it, choose remove from the popup with the options, then insert another one if you wish.  The "Change" option will change the link behind the image, not the image itself.

If using Picasa, it's worth noting that they offer 1 GB of free storage and images smaller than 800 x 800 pixels (2048 x 2048 if you are on Google+) do not count towards that (Picasa help).

You can also add an image as an attachment and it will appear as a thumbnail, with the option to view it in your browser or download it and save it to your computer.
