I am a little late to the game but your fix did the trick with mine. My symptoms were very similar in that as soon as Google Earth opened and the Tool Tips started, Google Earth just crashed and disappeared. Followed above steps and system works perfect. I am using a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and GE 6.0.3. I love navigating using with a 512GB SSD and 32GB of ram.
