Had to give up on Google Sites to act as the server for the .kml file and or to host the gadget, some kind of glitch there.  Have been successful using our own domain host and the FTP package they provide as the server to host the .kml file.  Been a long road.  Also, it seems that Google Chrome doesn't interface well in various steps so using the standard Google instead of Google Chrome worked for me.  Could Google Chrome have caused some of the issues in Google Sites?  I'll leave that Q to the experts.
