Mark, to the best of my knowledge I am using the latest versions of Google Earth mobile (v220.127.116.1163) and Android Browser on a Samsung Galaxy S2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Nothing I do will get Android browser to handle the KMLs correctly even though they open just fine using Opera Mobile and Firefox Mobile.
When I click on the relevant link to download/open a KML file Android Browser will ask me what to open it with, but it does not give me Google Earth as an option. It simply gives me a list of the web browsers I have installed. If I choose "Browser" on my S2, then Android Browser will pretend to open it in Google Earth but then Google Earth will give me a "not found" error.
One caveat that might be an issue is that the KMLs are protected by authentication so the browser has to download the file first and then hand it off to Google Earth. What might be happening is that Android Browser is trying to hand the URL off to Google Earth which is then trying to open the link directly from the web. In this case, Google Earth will fail to open the file because it doesn't have the proper authentication. Removing authentication from the KMLs is an unacceptable solution.
My S2 is using Android v2.3.6 and my Tab is using Android v3.2. According to the Google Store, both are running the most current version of Android Browser. At least I can't pull any updates.
Is Google Chrome beta different from the Android browser?
