Re: Why does spell check sometimes stop recognizing English words?

There seems to be an automatic language detection effort behind the spell checker. It performs badly and it seems to be not possible to override it; the setting through File > Language is not necessarily respected. It is all very erratic. Sometimes someone will report here a dozen English words that aren't recognized, and someone else will try to reproduce it and for the other person some of the ordinary words are recognized and others not.

I have conjectured that sometimes the automatic language detection algorithm decides that the language is Basic English [1]. I believe that that would explain the system not accepting contractions such as couldn't and didn't, and it would explain the error message for quite a lot of ordinary words. However, we have also seen a report that "simple" wasn't recognized [2], and it is a Basic English word.

If the spell checker refuses to recognize any word typed then that is easier to explain; it has gotten itself into a state where it is checking for a different language. In the "simple" example earlier it seemed that the spell checker still was set on something like English.
