We are a group of former Wall Street professionals who started a non-profit to teach local high school kids spreadsheet modeling. Our thesis is that data is the new global language of the future, and spreadsheets are the definitive tool.
Of course we are all whizzes at MS Excel. But most of our kids don't have PCs (vs Macs, which are critical for keyboard shortcuts), let alone MS Excel at home. Last summer, our students walked several miles to a local library so that they could practice between classes, only to find that the PCs there didn't have MS Office. It was a real shame and a lost opportunity.
But now, each time Google adds keyboard shortcut functionality to their spreadsheet product, they open up a whole new world for us. Our classes begin July 9, and I just made the executive decision to transition all our lessons onto the Google platform (from Excel). I'd like to keep everyone here up to date on our progress--I have a feeling I will have lots of questions as our classes begin. you can check us out at http://sololocales.org
