Ask a "how-to" question
Just as a side note from a web developer, the only way to create columns on the web without hard-coding them is not supported yet: CSS3 (http://www.w3schools.com/css3/css3_multiple_columns.asp). For Google Docs to enable multi-column layouts, they would have to use the same workarounds of tables or tabs that we currently use, but with the additional complication of doing so behind the scenes. If you think it's a pain for you, just imagine trying to develop the code for it (and maintain cross-browser/platform support). While I want multi-column support too, it's not fair to criticize Google when the web as a whole has not been able to do it after more than a decade (http://www.w3.org/1999/06/WD-css3-multicol-19990623).
