you are right, there is no such easy option but let me suggest to you what you can do
there is a mode called incognito mode which does not save history and leaves virtually no traces of your activity so when you want to surf in private, click CTRL + SHIFT + N and a new chrome window will open with the cool spy icon, and you can then safely open a new tab, and while it will have the most viewed 9 thumbnails it will only show the ones not from this browsing session so keep you normal chrome with decent sites and go incognito .... when ... emm.....
