For heaven's sake, who let the designers loose without a UI expert? Having a square block without any symbol is NOT intuitive. Morever, it doesn't look very elegant, doesn't work with many themes and fundamentally it neither saves space NOR makes it more user friendly. I have come to expect higher standards from Google and I hope to see this reverted. I'm hoping this a rogue designer or a senior dev with a hangover rather than a preview of what's to come...
