|Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||Marie Haynes||9/29/12 10:05 AM|
I'd like to have a good look at domains that were affected by the EMD (exact match domain) algo update on September 28th. The tweet from Matt Cutts said that this change affects EMD's that are *low quality*...but there is no mention of how exactly they mark a domain as low quality.
If you think you've been affected by this update, I would greatly appreciate if you could share your domain with me. You can email information to me at marie (at) hiswebmarketing.com or tweet me - @marie_haynes or respond in this thread.
Also, if you have an EMD that wasn't negatively affected, I'd love to hear of that too.
Once I've got enough I'll see if I can determine if there are any obvious factors that would flag an EMD as low quality.
Please include the following:
-How you feel you were affected - i.e. went from position #1 for main keyword to page 4, or saw a 50% drop in traffic, etc.
-age of your website (just so that the honeymoon effect is not a factor)
Also, please let me know whether I can use your domain name in my report (will include link to site) or if you'd like to remain totally anonymous.
Thanks guys! And please spread the word. The more domains we have in this study the better.

James, I thought Cutts said this has rolled out for US searches only. You're a uk domain ?

2+ dashes in the domain. Pure sign of a spam site. AWESOME
Matt has secretly listened to my spamodynamics theories.

My site - http://www.righttrianglecalculator.com has gotten no traffic at all today, and I can not find it in the SERPS (First 10 pages) for any of the keywords it was ranking for. It was on page one for "right triangle calculator" and "345 triangle" at least, last week.
It would seem this site would be exactly what google wants, relevant, exactly what is searched for, and to the point. It has not been marketed ever, in any way.
(I created this site out of a discussion in reddit a (long) while back about how it was hard to find one, and they were complicated to use. This is a calculator I created for the company intranet, so I just put it on the web). At least it was making about 3-4 bucks a month from Adsense - almost the hostgator hosting fee.)
This site may be a good example of "unintended consequences"?

You may have tripped a low quality signal, with can be anything (only google knows), but if I were you I would...
1) Combine the two separate H1's into 1 H1.
2) Move the 728 ad that falls under the h1 to just under the first paragraph or move it above the H1 and to the right hand side.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||travler||9/29/12 1:27 PM|
Agree with PF Unicorns about quality signals.
You have a number of sites - are they all seeing the drop?

|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||Michael Corder||9/29/12 3:31 PM|
Thank you both. I didn't realize there were two H1 tags right together. I just copied this simple page off my shop intranet site.. I will fix the H1 tags, and eliminate the all the ads entirely when I have time. However, the drop happened literally overnight, and this page has been up and untouched for over a year, with the same, steady, metrics.. Basically, I was just "throwing it in" for Marie's list.
Also affected on a large number of keywords was my 6 year old workshop hobby site: http://mccworkshop.com (Yes, I know it needs work, just haven't had the resources or time). It was ranking very well for some relatively obscure topics, which had a small, but steady following. All the computer history stuff (Univac 1219, teleram, Xerox) that were ranking is now gone out of the serps, though still showing as indexed - even the pictures.
But the big concern is http://michaelcorder.com. Having that site eliminated from the SERPS is a huge blow to me. (And I have just spent last week working very hard creating lots more material to post on it).
Thank you again for your replies. Sorry I am being so wordy. I'm really disillusioned.

No traffic today went from 200 pageview a day to 25 page view today
1 1/2 years
I think I trip a low quality some how, I have lots of good tutorials I've created myself. And some guess post I've been accepting, all unique good quality home improvement related stuff.... I got hit with penguin, cut my traffic in half, and now I get hit with this one, reducing traffic to nothing :( I use to rank for the wall textures keywords, and I dont rank at all anymore in the searches.

Im now revealing my EMS but my smaller what I consider low quality sites are still ok.. my two main ones with got 100% organic backlinks etc are gone. Daily updates to those two websites they were both a year old or so. My EMD sites which was not affected are all "new" sites bu the domains on most of them are a year old.
So for me I am seing age to a EMD is a factor.... Number of the Pages ( my new sites dont have more than 5 pages) possibly backlinks - very possible.

|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||Michael Corder||9/30/12 3:50 AM|
Don't know if it is related - or especially how. My 6 YO hobby site :http://mccworkshop.com has consistently for a very long time gotten 100-200 visits a day (about 1/3 of those returning). Yesterday, for the first time I can see in the logs going back 6 months, it got 32 visitors, and all of those were direct. Not one, single, search referral.
Though I don't keep good track (Yes it is a crappy website I have had to ignore for a couple years because of finances - I know someone here will comment), checking keywords some (such as the EMD of mccworkshop are still ranking, but entire sections have completely fallen out. Especially my Computer History articles, which were popular, and generated a lot of feedback (and newfound friends). Most were on page 1 (univac 1219, xerox 820, teleram, and several other keywords) and are now nowhere to be found.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||VonDerat||9/30/12 5:14 PM|
A very upsetting move by Google. I have a few EMDs with 5-6 pages of content each that had already disappeared from SERP last year, now this EMD algo change is affecting my good sites as well. Unfortunately Google is giving out more irrelevant results from very large sites, to effectively remove good EMDs. My theory is that at this moment Quality to Google seems to be very large sites.
Example: my keywords were: Traditional Mexican Recipes, which is exactly what my site gives (http://www.mexicanrecipes.me/ does just that.)
Now if I key in Traditional Mexican Recipes in google.com search I see many unrelated sites, but these sites are very large corporate sites, such as Pillsbury (???), cooks.com, food.com etc, etc...
They fall short when it comes to answering the request though: traditional mexican recipes, so in this case the results from Google are less good than they were.
I have worked very hard at this one, and others too... this is very upsetting indeed.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||tandm||9/30/12 5:44 PM|
Google this " Carpet Cleaning Gilbert AZ"
according to Google adword keyword tools this "exact phrase" is labeled "high" competition.
You will find this EMD on the first page of the search results right below chem-dry and service magic, and guess what, it has NO content, and NOTHING on the page but and image and an alt tag saying "carpet cleaning gilbert az" and that's it.
What's really going on? tired of hearing "low quality exact match" for an answer. Something else is going on.
This site sure ranking good, considering it doesn't have ANY content on it.

www.mybestgermanrecipes.com - not low quality site. more than 600 subscribers, more than 1100 FB likes, more than 700 followers and a strong growing Pinterest community. the site was up to almost 2500 views daily and supposed to be the best site for that niche of German recipes.
Now there are sites showing up that are not having original food. I even caught on yummly.com that stole a photo of mine.
You can use my domain name in the report.
page ranking was almost 5 (4.73) - site could be found under german recipes, now nothing. yesterday views 1100 but Saturday 500.
crashed about 80%.
I had sponsors who paid for my work and I placed their ad, so that's now gone. How can I promote the site with less than 50% visits?
And all this before the holidays which are the strongest time.
I am very unhappy and I cried for 1 hour yesterday.
check the site out and let me know how I can get this up again. It was part of my income.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||Gabriele8008||10/1/12 1:05 PM|
same happened to my site mybestgermanrecipes.com - crashed 80%.
stupid sites like food.com allrecipes yummly.com showing up with now whatsoever original recipes. google tries to get rid of the small sites and businesses. This is more than just emd bullshit. this is a campaign to globalize the Internet.
There is nothing wrong with your or my site. They were in the way.

Noticing junk/affiliate https://sites.google.com listed in the the top 20 results throughout my industry. All sites have scraped content w/ Amazon affiliate links.
Try this query: http://www.google.com/#q=lloyd+flanders+contempo
At the bottom of page 2 of the results. 2 sites.google.com that are used as doorway pages for Amazon affiliates.

My site Promocodes2012.blogspot.com got badly hit by EMD, I was able to get 10K impression per day but all of sudden on 29th its reduce to 4K only. What should I do now? Should I change domain name ?
May I able to get my rank back?
your any kind of suggestion is highly appreciated.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||joeg524||10/7/12 7:36 PM|
My website www.background-checks-systems.com took a serious dive in daily traffic on or about 09/28/2012. At first i thought it had to do with switching our DNS servers using dnsmadeasy(dot)com. As you can see, I have an EMD. Although my domain name still shows at Google, it no longer ranks for any of our previous SERPS -- So it appears as though I was sandboxed.
My domain was created since 2002. Other related name domains I have purchased throughout the years, all have a 301 redirect and are registered at webmaster tools. So it is not like I'm promoting other domains pointing to my main site in a backdoor sort of way.
All of my pages as well as my blog have fresh, original content. G has over 400 pages indexed, so I guess I would qualify to be deemed a large site. My IP's are not in any spam block list. I have my own private server using domain name listed above.
I'm really having a tough time figuring what could possibly be wrong, unless a competitor is pointing spammy sites to my domain or something obvious that I may have overlooked.
Any help would be truly appreciated.

Fire sale on Domain Search Engine Optimization (dot) com. It totally disappeared. Rightly so. One of my first sites and a piece of cr*p. And here I thought this long tail domain name was a winner! lol

I have a speed reading site with a 13 year old domain with one of the best speed free speed reading tools that I spent hundreds of dollars on getting developed and a free speed reading course. Was ranked in top 15 and now not even in top 500 and lost 95% of my traffic. Site is quickreading.com
I did a reconsideration request and they said nothing was wrong.
I have tried making the content better and removing all affiliate links and nothing.
you can use my domain in your report.

Our site: www.carbuyingtips.com
is the very definition of an EMD plus you have the requisite low quality factors thrown in to reinforce the EMD.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||christian231||10/8/12 1:25 PM|
You say he has "the requisite low quality factors" on www.carbuyingtips.com. What are you considering "Low Quality"? I just did a quick look around the site and it appears to be full of quality information. I didn't check to see if it's taken from other websites or not, but aside from the fact that there's a lot of links to external sites, I think the on page quality appears to be ok. I'm just curious what you thought was causing the low quality? Thanks.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||canuckbid||10/8/12 1:34 PM|
lol Low quality because its scraped content. Check out the results at copyscape.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||christian231||10/8/12 1:43 PM|
Ok then I agree with the low quality statement then. Like I said, I didn't check to see if it was dupe content from somewhere, but that would explain it. That's a shame because it's a good domain name to own, or at least it was.

|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||canuckbid||10/9/12 6:11 PM|
Where do u want to start? To begin with "need for speed" term is copy write protected. Scraped content, poor use of the English language, annoying use of pop ups, regional domain extension. I am not even going to look at any SEO code issues. I can not see it coming out of the "black abyss" in its current state.

Thats INSANE! I have used this site many times and you guys have tons and tons of great content! So to get hit by EMD/Panda/Penguin is crap!
Sorry to hear that.......my guess: is your Anchor Text which is mostly "car buying tips" yes I know its your domain and your brand....but may tripped the filters for exact match.
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||D1974||10/11/12 6:37 PM|
Yep, I got hit serviceinmyarea.com . And while this is a startup, I don't think it's low quality, at least on site. Built in html 5, and CSS 3. Clean clear navigation, layout, and decent design, fast loading speeds. Hmmmmm.... what's missing? Links! I think when they talk quality, high authority links is what is at the top of the list. Everything else is extra.

|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||StevieD_Web||10/13/12 2:53 PM|
1) Site over-optimized through visible content, tags and internal navigation anchor text to the point of being keyword stuffed.
2) Questionable backlinks:
3) Backlink anchor text matches the same over-optimized efforts as the on-site content.
4) choice of EMD to match generic search queries rather than a brandable business such as Michael-S-Attorney.com.
Remember, just because somebody is searching for the generic fiancee visa law does not mean the searcher wanted YOUR site as any law firm providing the same service could have and most likely would have meet the needs of the searcher.

My Blog vacancies-online.blogspot.com was also affected by the EMD update. It happened on Sept 28 2012. Before it had nearly 8000 hits/ day....but now it is rarely touching 1000 hits/day :( . After this disaster,i changed the site template and removed most of the affiliate links. but still nothing happens. Please suggest a remedy for it
|Re: Were you affected by the EMD algo update?||travler||12/6/12 5:04 AM|
vacancies-online, this 'free' google hosted blog has more issues than simple devaluation of EMD.
Start with keyword-stuffed titles, MFA, page layout algo update and no original content.
For targeted info, open a new thread or search this forum for those issues.
