|Today My Authorship Picture Has Stopped Appearing Next to Some Results, Please Help||YourAdrenalineFix||10/26/12 8:14 AM|
Today I noticed that my traffic has dropped so I went looking for what could be causing this and when checking my positions in the SERP's I noticed that my rankings appear to be fine but what I did notice is that my authorship picture is not appearing next to several of my listings which I checked so I'm wondering if the reason may be that my authorship implementation may be suffering (penalized) because the present picture doesn't show my face clearly (enough).
I did have another pic in this one's place a week or so ago and that one was a clear shot of my face and so much so it was in a way similar to a mug shot. (Please see screen shot below)
Well I thought I'd change that to one whereas my visitors would really know: "Yea... This dude is all about my niche" as I felt this might make a potential visitor more inclined to click my result in the SERP's thereby increasing my CTR
Although the new pic DOES show my face (more easily seen when viewed large such as on my G+ profile) Im wondering if I could be suffering a penalty because this new pic is not such a closeup.
What im wondering is if I should put the closeup back... or is the picture I have there now fine??
Please See This Screenshot for an Example of the 2 Pictures in Reference --> http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1OnJJjuFAAGL1Z8fNrHV8fN0USzG1
If anyone wouldn't mind commenting on this I'd sure be appreciative and I do thank you in advance.

Lots of folks very curious exactly how Google is choosing when to show authorship.

Anyone else care to chime in??
Today I noticed more of my results not having the authorship picture so I changed my G+ profile pic back to the one that is primarily a head shot (Please see link to screenshot above) but I don't know with certainty if my authorship pics are going away because I was using the pic with a motorcycle behind me in place of the other pic that clearly shows just my face, or if it's just because of other things happening at Google which I may not know about.
If anyone (Google Staff??) wouldn't mind commenting on this, I'd be most appreciative as I'd sure like to know if my picture with the motorcycle behind me is causing my authorship pics to vanish or if it's something else entirely.
I do thank you all very much in advance and I do look forward to your replies.
Thanks so Much,

This is not a penalty of any kind. Even the popular websites have this issue. Nobody is actually sure about this behavior of Google. Test your URL at the Rich snippets testing tool. If it works fine, then there is nothing to be done on your part.

The help center ( http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1408986 ) mentions "a good, recognizable headshot as your profile photo" -- it's really more than just having your face somewhere on the photo. Also keep in mind that authorship and other kinds of rich snippets aren't guaranteed to always be shown (even when everything is technically correct).
Hope it helps,

I have found it's not at all unusual for the little photo to dissappear and come back a few days or even weeks later. You can also check with webmaster tools just how this rich snippet effects your CTR etc.
