|Second Algo Update Rolled Out Within EMD Change Timeframe||Suzanneh||10/3/12 5:19 AM|
Supposedly, according to this Twitter exchange between Matt Cutts and Gregory Smith, another algo change was implemented around the same time as the EMD update.
Now this makes perfect sense. Some people here were effected by something but it didn't seem to make sense that it was the EMD. It probably wasn't. It was a different algo change.
For my own site, what I noticed was links to Google Play and iTunes for apps related to a particular keyword. This pushed my site down. I also dropped a few slots too.
At least those who thought they were inexplicably hit by the EMD update, can put that aside and focus on trying to figure out what the other change was.

The change that I saw happen with my site started at around 10:PM EST, Thursday, September 27th.

It's pretty much safe to assume that every time Google rolls out a Magnitude 7+ Algo Update that gets everyone talking, they're also rolling out a bunch of tweaks and refinements to the existing arsenal. I've seen this happen a bunch of times, and in a lot of cases it's the smaller stuff that gets people as much as the big monster updates.

Seems it was a Panda update affecting "2.4% of search queries."
@Sasch: The more things change the more they stay the same. :-) I've been doing this for 10 years; luckily, I was oblivious to a lot the changes. Now I like to keep on top of what's going on...just in case. I'm working hard on improving other sources of traffic too.

Staying on top of things is a must in this game. Glad to hear you're pursuing other traffic sources. Too many people just tend to ignore everything outside the great god Google.
