|Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich Issues - USB Mounting, Charging, and more||Heofonlicht||12/26/11 4:39 PM|

Since applying the update for ICS several days ago, I have experienced a host of issues on my mobile phone. These issues include -
1) Bizarre behavior when battery is drained. Plugging the phone into a power outlet or USB will cause the phone to turn on. Onced turned on, phone often does not respond to screen input nor the power button. Phone repowers itself frequently while in this state.
2) When the phone is plugged in to an outlet or USB, attempting to power the phone off will result in an endless cycle where the powering off dialogue is shown and the process never completes. The only way to complete the process is to unplug the phone, at which point it powers off immediately.
3) Phone does not completely recognize when the power or USB charge is connected. The battery does charge (and the charging state can be confirmed when accessing the Battery view from the settings panel). However, the battery indicator in the top right-hand of the screen does not show a charging icon anymore. If the battery has a less than 15% charge left - with that home screen recommendation "Connect to charger" - and the USB or power charge is connected, that message is still displayed, further suggesting that the phone is not recognizing the connection. Connecting the phone to a PC through a USB does not prompt the user to mount the USB storage anymore. All efforts to get the USB connection to succeed have failed. Applications that rely on a USB connection will cause the USB mounting screen to flicker for a second and an icon to appear in the top drop-down panel indicating a USB mounting problem. So any sort of syncing in the meantime is a non-starter.
The whole update has been a very unpleasant experience. To make matters worse, I haven't been able to find any sort of official response from Google (or an apology for that matter) saying that they have discovered these issues, are working on them, and estimate that the issue will be fixed by a certain date.
As a developer myself, I appreciate how hard it is to release an update that is 100% bug-free. These issues are not trivial though and should have been more thoroughly tested. These features were all working before the update.

I have lost the ability to connect via USB to my Macbook. Even reinstalled the recommended software on the Mac, but the Nexus physical connection never results in a file box opening that would allow me to transfer.
Nexus S (T-Mobile)
MacBook Pro (2010 vintage)
The unit will stay on when I plug it in, but I can shut it off. Battery life is as good or better.

I cannot get the USB to connect with ICS on nexus s to Win 7 x64 either. I tried turning USB debugging on, but no difference.

I used to be able to fiddle with USB debugging to get it to connect, but no longer.

I had exactly the same issue - managed to sort it by wiping the phone from the recovery menu (including the davlik cache) and allowing the phone to re-initialise ICS.
This only lasted for a couple of weeks though - for some reason the USB has started misbehaving once again, so I'm going to transfer all of my photos wirelessly and then do it again.. about time we got a new ROM with a fix!

I'm having some of the same issues as described above. Besides that, the battery drains very fast...

I notched the same issues, but if i move the usb around a little i have managed to get the phone to recognize a charge

I've also had these exact problems however the battery sign does sometimes work, it's an intermittent issue. I'm a computer science student and was using the nexus to code on in my final year project however since I can no longer load applications onto the device via USB or debug via USB due to the ICS update I'm a bit screwed. Very unhappy with this part of ICS however everything else has been fine, I've had no WiFi,GPS,NFC or Bluetooth issues as other people seem to be reporting.

While you are in this pickle, which I find myself in as well...I am using "Wifi File Explorer" which allows me to get into the Android file system via wireless using a browser on the same network. It's pretty cool.

I am having USB issues as well. Phone cannot be read from windows explorer. Win 7 64 bit. T-Mobile Nexus S with ICS.

Well I managed to finally fix my Nexus S!
First of all I reflashed with the latest CodenameAndroid ROM and gApps - all looking good so far, GPS back as well, but didn't fix the USB issue..
..then tried installing new drivers, android SDK, pdaNet etc to fix the USB but nothing did it.
Finally saw a forum post where some guy tried bending the little flat metal bit up inside the phone's usb plug with a penknife - so I gave that a go out of desperation. it only bloody worked

Same thing here!

Am a developer so need the USB connectivity on my Nexus S for debugging / installing. Tried it this morning on my Nexus S 4.0.3 on Orange UK and nothing, charging is intermittent - sometimes you get the symbol sometimes you don't. It *NEVER* mounts as USB which is always has done until this morning,
From the thread here others clearly have the same issue - GOOGLE PLEASE FIX... right now I cant do any development at all and am stuck. Will be giving the penknife a go in a minute but clearly that's not an advisable solution, right?

Update to the above... penknife trick worked for me too. Just eased the little metal bit gently but firmly upwards with a plastic tool while the phone was running and re connected it. Bam! USB is back! Nexus s USB connector is clearly a bit prone to bad connections. Post further up - mcorton - thanks a million!

+1 After tearing my hair out for a few weeks, the penknife trick also worked for me.
|Re: Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich Issues - USB Mounting, Charging, and more||joseph.hannon||2/8/12 3:40 AM|
@jack.saltiel Thanks for that, I'll give it a go. Ive seen the pen knife thing before and really didn't want to try it but out of desperation I'm going to try it now and see what happens, I'll edit back into this to let people know. Also it seems a bit odd that somehow the software ICS upgrade has affected the USB hardware...
|Re: Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich Issues - USB Mounting, Charging, and more||jack.saltiel||2/8/12 4:46 AM|
Mine has started working again 90+% of the time. All I did was wiggle the usb connection around after seeing the pen knife trick. I may have to go in a give it a little knudge to make it 100%. Samsung should issue a cute little android pen knife with every Nexus they sell!
|Re: Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich Issues - USB Mounting, Charging, and more||joseph.hannon||2/9/12 3:51 AM|
I was just about to fiddle with the USB connector but thought I'd have one last go so after not trying it for a week I've just plugged it into the USB port on my laptop and it recognises it now, with no changes what so ever made by me... The Device screen on Eclipse does now say "com.android.chrome" on it now and I just installed the new Chrome Beta yesterday, perhaps this could have something to do with it? So perhaps if it's not working for anyone try installing chrome first.
I'm still not that happy though, I want to know it will work long term and since I need it for development and if it breaks I'm screwed.

Effing Penknife trick worked to fix the exact same issue for me! I did not get the charging icon and I was not able to connect to the computer - just a slight push on the metal with a small knife and its fixed!
|Re: Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich Issues - USB Mounting, Charging, and more||johntaylor||5/6/12 9:16 PM|
Can you give me a brief description of how to perform the penknife trick? Don't want to do the wrong thing and make any permanent damage to the cord, thanks!

Hold the phone with the usb connector facing you and the screen facing upwards. If you look closely, in the connector, the pins that make the data and charging connections are facing upwards and are on a protrusion I'll call a tounge. For some reason, the data pins aren't making contact with a cable when plugged in. If you gently push up on this tounge, then plug your cable back in, things should magically start working again.
The tounge is not made of metal, like others have stated, its plastic, so if you push too much you could break it and would be in for a more laborious repair.
I just ran into the same issue and the penknife trick worked - except that I didn't have a penknife around, so I used a thumbtack. Additional symptoms are, if you take out the battery, plug the charger in, then put the battery back in you will get the white charging screen and the phone doesn't try to boot itself. If you boot the phone at that state, once booted, the battery indicator in the status bar does show the lightning bolt indicating charging, but disappears once the cable is removed and reattached.
