|Want to create custom map to plot locations using lat/long||mark_gober||7/14/09 6:28 AM|
I have a spreadsheet that has several hundred records in it. Each has a lat/long associated with it. I want to be able to create a custom Google map to plot these. (What I'd really love to do is to upload the xls file and have the plots pop up, but I realize this may be wishful thinking) I'm open to manually entering it, but can this be done?

Not too wishful, I think this may help: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/services.html#XML_Requests
it is xml, but you can probably adapt it for JSON, or with some creative js you can just AJAX your file in: http://www.xul.fr/en-xml-ajax.html#request-step-by-step

I think there is some kind of Google spreadsheet that might let you do that but not sure.
Another alternative is to use one of the many excel to kml converters and then import the kml file into Google Maps.
